Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Parent-Teacher Conference
Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for next week. Attending a conference at school to find out how your child is doing can be an emotional time for parents. Most parents have set high expectations for their children and are hoping that they will hear good news from their child’s teacher. Other parents who may have had difficulties succeeding in school themselves, may be nervous because they don’t want their child to have the same type of learning problems. Whatever the feeling, it is always helpful to know that when a parent and teacher are working together for a child, the best outcomes will be seen. Teachers have only a short amount of time to share a “snapshot” of how your child is doing, and explain what they may need some extra help with at home. Be assured that they are making suggestions that will help your child to be successful in the future. Parenting is a tough job, teaching is a tough job, and both should be seen as two of the most important jobs in our world.
Here are five things to ask or listen for during your parent/teacher conference:
In what academic areas is my child seeing success?
In what academic areas does my child have difficulty? What can I do at home to support my child?
How is my child doing with grade-level responsibilities? What should I be doing at home to encourage greater responsibility?
How is my child doing socially - during academic time as well as free time?
How can I (the parent) support you (the teacher)? Please also share what is happening in your child’s home life that may need support from the school staff.

Background Checks
Otsego Public Schools thrives in part because of our many volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include classroom helpers, chaperones for field trips, boosters, and other volunteer groups. In order to volunteer, you must have an updated background check on file. Otsego will now require all individuals who volunteer to complete a background check each year; therefore, any volunteer with a background check dated prior to June 2022, will need to fill out a new form. If you are unsure if a new background check is required for you, please reach out to your child's school building or contact LeAnne Perkowski in our Administration Office (LPerkowski@otsegops.org or 269-694-7902).
Thanksgiving Meals
Friendship Wesleyan Church is providing Thanksgiving meal baskets this year for families in need of encouragement or support in our local area. The meal consists of an uncooked turkey, boxed mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls and butter, canned vegetables, and a dessert. There is enough in each basket for a family of six. If you need a second basket, just let us know. You can pick up your basket on November 19th, from 12-3pm, at Friendship Wesleyan Church (1285 102nd Ave. Plainwell, MI 49080). If there is an extenuating circumstance where a basket needs to be dropped off, please reach out. If you would like to receive a meal, please email Mrs. Bender at abender@otsegops.org, or call 269-694-7826 to be added to the list.
