Northwoods News
A Message from Principal Nixon--March 24, 2021
Dear Northwoods Families,
I'm sending this newsletter out a few days earlier than I had originally planned because there have been many important announcements and updates sent out by the district and state over the last week and a half, and I wanted to ensure you had this information prior to entering into Spring Break. Please take a few minutes to read through the information below.
I hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing, and device-free Spring Break!
Respectfully,
Joe Nixon
Principal

School Information
Enrollment Cap
On Tuesday, January 16, 2021, the WCPSS Board of Education approved our school to be capped immediately. For more information regarding capped schools and what this may mean for you, please click here. This is very important for families that have siblings that have not yet registered for school.
Spring Break:
This is a friendly reminder that Spring Break is March 29th - April 7th. The school building will be closed during Spring Break and teachers will not be posting any work in Google Classroom. We hope you take the time to relax and unwind from a chaotic and stressful year. Enjoy the break!
4th Quarter Student Material Distribution:
Reminder: VA families should plan to pick up Q4 instructional supplies this Thursday (3/25) and/or Friday (3/26). Materials for students attending school in-person will be delivered directly to each classroom. Please see the dates/times for the material distribution on the flyer below.
Instructional Material Return:
As a reminder, all EL novels, math manipulative kits, headphones, calculators, student whiteboards, and library books that have been sent home must be returned prior to the end of the school year. Families may begin returning materials from previous quarters at any time. A final material collection will be conducted prior to the last school day.
Workday Change:
The WCPSS Board of Education voted on Monday to make a change to the traditional calendar. The teacher workday scheduled on May 13th has now been moved to April 7th. As such, Spring Break for students will be extended by one day. Their first day back to school will be April 8th.
VA Families Can Switch to Plan A
Governor Cooper recently signed into law SB220, which requires all school districts in North Carolina to provide a Plan A (full in-person learning) option to all families. As such, families whose students are currently enrolled in Virtual Academy can now make a request to resume in-person learning. For more information, including the process to request in-person instruction, please see the "quick facts" document below.
PTA Information
Our annual PTA fundraiser will kick off in just 3 weeks on April 14, 2021. Our goal is to raise $15,000 for picnic tables for our outdoor learning spaces, new murals for the main building, and next year’s PTA budget. This year, fundraising is more critical than ever! We’ve asked our friends at Booster to power our fundraiser to make it more profitable, fun, and easy for everyone. We have worked closely together to ensure this event follows the safety and health guidelines of our school.
Here’s what all students can get excited about:
• Fun, engaging character development lessons
• A high-energy DanceFit event to give our school a much-needed boost of fun!
If your family feels it’s not in the position to financially support the school, that’s ok. Families can actually support our school by also SHARING about our fundraiser with friends and family online. Sharing IS supporting.

- Fundraiser Kick-Off – April 14, 2021
