Behavior Tip of the Week:
This week we will focus on Empathic Listening.
Empathic listening is defined as "An active process to discern what a person is saying". The word ACTIVE indicates that this type of listening takes SKILL and INTERACTION with the person who wants your attention.
How could being an empathic listener help you? Who are people that may need you to be an empathic listener? Students? Parents? Co-workers?
Being an empathic listener can be EASY! There are 5 easy steps to become a more EMPATHIC LISTENER.
Steps 1 - 3
Give you undivided attention (texting or answering an email while someone is talking to you may escalate the situation or communicate that the person is not valuable to you)
Listen carefully - focus on feelings or facts.(Pick up on the way the person is feeling and think - How would I feel in a similar situation?)
Steps 4 & 5
Restate and paraphrase (Use phrases such as "what I hear you saying is...." to gain clarity.)
In Conclusion
Being an EMPATHIC LISTENER can help decrease the chances of a situation escalating while building the relationship and trust.
Try to use these steps to being a more EMPATHIC LISTENER this week and reflect on your experience HERE. Responses received by Wednesday 10/12/16 at 12 (noon) will be rewarded with a treat in their teacher box.
