Inside the Idea Lab with Mrs. Stephens - January 24th
This week students had a wide variety of activities to utilize during Idea Lab. Popular choices among third, fourth, and fifth graders included building roller coasters, creating with Wikki Stix, and working on a special Lego building project which will become a fully functional chess set. The Ozobot Bit and modeling clay were used quite a lot as well. Among kindergarten, first, and second graders, the most sought-after activities included using Code-a-pillars, Bee-bots, and Color Change Glasses. Another coding game frequently chosen was the Robot Mouse. The lower grades also enjoyed Wikki Stix, and Play-Doh was a popular station for them. Legos, Magna-Tiles, and Hourofcode.com continue to be favorites among all ages. Students were wonderfully polite and considerate of their classmates when choosing their stations, working in small groups, and trading places to try other stations.
Featured books this week centered on the topics of upcoming holidays. Our books about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Groundhog Day have all been checked out, as have many of our books about Chinese culture. Chinese New Year is just around the corner and 2019 is the Year of the Pig, so this week all of our books with pig characters were on display. Many of these were enthusiastically checked out. Who knew there were so many literary pigs? We discovered series featuring Piggie (from Elephant and Piggie), as well as Mercy Watson, Poppleton, and Amanda Pig, just to name a few.
It’s wonderful to see students so excited about reading and exploring new technologies. In coming weeks we will continue to explore our newest tech toys. Our new whiteboard tables have been fantastic for utilizing all of these activities. For example, students using the Color Change Glasses were able to write directly on the table with different colored markers to see how the different lenses in their glasses would affect their perception of the marker color. All in all we had a great Thursday, summed up in the words of one happy first grader who told me, “Library is the greatest!”
Shoe Donations Needed
February is Box Tops for Education Collection Month
Parents, raid your kitchen junk drawers for those valuable little cardboard squares and send them in. The little coupons can be found on Kleenex, General Mills products, Ziploc bags and other products you probably buy already. Simply cut them off the box, trim them neatly and have your child bring them to school in a Ziploc bag. Please send them in by Friday, February 22nd. The collection bin is in the office. Also, please make sure the dates are not expired.
It's Cold Weather Time Again
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to go outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal.
