P-TECH at Watervliet Weekly Update
January 11, 2019
Identity Projects
This week in science, students researched their family medical history to produce family pedigrees. They used their pedigrees and their research to investigate their own genetics and predispositions.
In English, students finished this unit's text Darius & Twig. In finishing the text, students were asked to look at the dreams and aspirations of the main characters. They reflected on how the setting and supporting characters of the story effected these dreams. In addition to this, students analyzed the choices the characters made and how their decisions impacted the plot and their ability to follow their dreams.
Also this week, Mr. Honsinger continued to work with students on their own personal career exploration. Students have begun work on a career presentation which will help them gain awareness of career outlook, salary, certifications and education needed, job requirements, and other characteristics. These presentations will allow students to hear a variety of career options and associated information.
Math/Coding Update
In their computer work, students have been learning about HTML. HTML is the language that is used to code websites. Students are now applying this knowledge to create their own website from scratch.
New P-TECH Course
During the second half of the year, P-TECH students will be able to complete the 0.5 credit, HS graduation requirement, Participation in Government. This course, often called “PIG” or “Government” is a social studies class and is typically taken during a student’s senior year. By taking and passing the course this year, P-TECH students will have room for an additional college course during their 12th grade year.
The PIG class will be taught by a new member of our Watervliet P-TECH team, Katherine Burke, and will start during the last week in January. Feel free to reach out to Mr. Honsigner, tim.honsinger@neric.org, or Mrs. Burke, katherine.burke@neric.org, with questions or concerns.
