Characterization
"Zach had leaned over towards the doll as if it was actually real. As if it would reach out a hand and touch him. Slowly, he reached out a shaky hand and put his pointer finger on the dolls forehead." The narrators comments tell us that Zach feels scared about the doll, and that he doesn't even want to touch it.
Figurative Language
"While the trees swayed, reminding Zach of seaweed." The author uses personification to describe what the trees are doing. She also uses a metaphor to compare what the tree is doing to seaweed.
"As the wind encouraged them to finish the journey." The author uses personification to describe that the wind was howling and pushing them on to continue the search for Eleanor's grave.
"Zach watched as the bright sun rose up, causing the light to dance as it washed over bright colored flower beds." The author uses sensory language to explain how it looks when Zach woke up.
"The tree fell with a loud thump." The author uses onomatopoeia to describe how the tree sounded when it fell.
