MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Crescent Harbor Elementary Family:
The weather has followed the calendar -- right as the autumn season began, the temperature has dropped and the rain has begun to fall. This means a few things for our students. First, they will be wearing jackets and heavier clothes to school. And some of them will leave them here:) We have a Lost and Found in our main hallway where we put clothing and other objects that we find around campus. If your child is missing clothing, a lunch box, a water bottle, or something else that came to school, please check out our Lost and Found.
On Monday, the Taproot Theatre performed at our first assembly. The topic of the performance was standing up to bullying. In a creative performance, they taught our students what bullying looked like and how to respond to it. The message was to Recognize, Report, and Refuse. They also challenged students to stand up to bullying by calling it out and helping the victim, and not to stand by and watch while someone else is treated meanly. Ask your student about the assembly, and help reinforce the message by using the same words that we use. At CHE, we will address all incidents of bullying, but we need to know about it. So encourage your child to report bullying to a staff member right away.
October has many fun and important events that are talked about in this newsletter. Please read through it and keep it for reference. We will send reminders and more details about each event as they occur, so look for emails and posts on Parent Square to stay informed.
Every day I come to school, I appreciate that you entrust your most valuable commodity -- your child -- to the Crescent Harbor Elementary staff. This caring group of educators works hard every day to help all of our students grow, and we want to do our work with you. So please stay informed, reach out to your student’s teacher, and let us know what is working and what we can get better at.
Sincerely,
Mr. W.

IMPACT AID
It's the time of the year that we ask our Oak Harbor Public School families to complete Impact Aid Survey Forms. Beginning this school year, families can complete the forms online using our new communication platform, ParentSquare.
School districts conduct this survey to identify the number of military and Department of Defense civilian employee children attending our local public schools. The form must be completed, signed and returned in order for Oak Harbor Public Schools to receive vital funding to support important student programs and services. Please click here to complete the form. You will need to sign into your ParentSquare account to complete the form. Please complete one form per student.
We have developed a webpage with additional resources and directions to support families with completing the form. Families can also request a paper copy of the form through their school's front office.
Thank you very much for your participation.
SEL SCREENER 2023-2024
Dear Crescent Harbor Elementary Families,
In Oak Harbor Public Schools we are committed to creating positive learning environments, fostering belonging, and supporting the holistic development of all our students. One way we support this work is through student voice surveys. For the past four years we have partnered with a third party vendor to administer a survey to students in grades 3-12. The purpose of the survey is to help increase student voice in our district. It gives us an indication of where our strengths are and where we can do better in service to our students.
The survey will be administered twice this year, in October and April. Here is some additional information about the survey:
The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and will be administered in class.
The survey results are confidential.
The survey content asks students to reflect on their supportive relationships, feelings towards school, self-management, social-awareness and emotional regulation.
If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether.
The survey contains both multiple choice and short answer questions. A few examples of questions include:
“Do you have a teacher or other adult from school that you can count on to help you, no matter what?”
“What do you wish your teacher knew about how school feels for you?”
If you have any questions about our student voice survey or concerns about your student participating, please contact one of the following members of the Teaching and Learning team:

NURSE NOTES
Sleep and Health
Adequate sleep contributes to a student’s overall health and well-being. Students should get the proper amount of sleep at night to help stay focused, improve concentration, and improve academic performance.
Children and adolescents who do not get enough sleep have a higher risk for many health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, poor mental health, and injuries. They are also more likely to have attention and behavior problems, which can contribute to poor academic performance in school.
How Much Sleep Do Students Need?
How much sleep someone needs depends on their age. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has made the following recommendations for children and adolescents:
Age Group
Recommended Hours of Sleep Per Day:
- 6-12 years: 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours
- 13-18 years: 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours
What Can Parents Do?
Model and encourage habits that help promote good sleep. Setting a regular bedtime and rise time, including on weekends, is recommended for everyone—children, adolescents, and adults alike. Adolescents with parent-set bedtimes usually get more sleep than those whose parents do not set bedtimes.
Dim lighting. Adolescents who are exposed to more light (such as room lighting or from electronics) in the evening are less likely to get enough sleep.
Implement a media curfew. Technology use (computers, video gaming, or mobile phones) may also contribute to late bedtimes. Parents should consider banning technology use after a certain time or removing these technologies from the bedroom.
