Mason Moose Minutes October 22
Teamwork it is! One Mason, One Family, One Team!
Message from the Principal
Happy Friday! As I reflect on this week, I take pride in many things that took place throughout our Mason classrooms! Below are a few that truly made the Mason team learn, lift, and lead!
* Family Chess Night was held by Mr. Ratcliff and his dear 4th grade students! We appreciate each of them, and truly thank the families that came out to join us! Observing the students take on the lead to teach and play with their families the game of chess, taking part of the learning and playing myself, and all of us sharing in laughter and healthy competition was inspiring! Thank you Mr. Ratcliff for your creativity in planning this event!
* Our Kindergarten Alphabet Fashion show was held this week, with each of our dear kindergarten students representing a letter of the alphabet! Led by their teachers, they walked throughout the halls of Mason with their heads held high taking pride in them learning the alphabet and with their Mason family, cheering them on, clapping, and even singing the alphabet song as they waved at us! Thank you Ms. Cole, Ms. Ostrowski, Ms. Tyler and Ms. Massingill for your hard work in planning this special event! Additionally, thank you to all of our families who worked hard with their student to prepare for this event!
* Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Monroe and the support of Ms. Nash, we were able to ensure that every student at Mason has a refillable water bottle at school to use at the water filling stations! We were also able to provide each classroom teacher with 200 cone cups to be able to use in case a student forgets their water bottle at home. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Monroe for your water bottle donations! Your generosity is truly appreciated!
* Town Hall Meetings/Assemblies were held with 2nd-4th grade students, to reflect on the learners we want to be at Mason, collaborating on how Mason is home away from home, and how we here at Mason during the school day are family away from family. Students reflected on making positive choices, how we should treat each other, how we can be leaders, how we should display signs of teamwork, and what it means when we say "Together we learn, we lift, and we lead." I read Try a Little Kindness, by Henry Cole to the students to reinforce some of our key points as well.
* The school took part in a read aloud as part of our Monday morning announcement! This week the book was, All Are Welcome, by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman. Our goal is to support the Mason family, which includes our dear students, families, staff and community to build relationships, be open to learn from one another, help support and motivate each other, and believe in ourselves and in each other.
As I often tell our dear students, I believe in them, and I want them to believe in themselves! Thank you sincerely for your ongoing support and partnership in addressing our students' needs. We continue to move forward as One Mason, One Family, One Team! If you need anything in the meantime, please know you can contact me via email at Hassana@gpschools.org or by phone at (313) 432-4404. As always....Teamwork it is! Together we learn, we lead, and we lift!

Friday, October 29 Is A Half Day!
Halloween Classroom Parties and Parade - Friday, October 29th
- Mason Halloween Classroom Parties are scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2021! This is a scheduled half day for students at 11:36 a.m. as staff have scheduled professional development in the afternoon.
- Halloween Party Details:
- 9:00 a.m. Parade starts - parade begins with 4th grade exiting from Door A the main entrance/exit of Mason first, then lower elementary following out last.
- Route will be exiting from Door A, walking on the sidewalk making a left onto Vernier Rd, then making a left onto Charlevoix Rd, then a left into the sidewalk inside the playground within the school fence area, staying onto the sidewalk to the soccer field, returning back into Mason through Door A (front door).
- We ask that all students stay in line with their teacher. Families are welcomed to stand alongside the route to take pictures and cheer for their student. We hope to be back into the classrooms by 9:45 a.m.
- 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Classroom parties will take place in each classroom. Each classroom may have up to 2 parents/family members volunteer to help during the party. Teachers will randomly pick which two will be chosen (hat pull, etc.). Please communicate your interest with the teacher directly, and ensure that your ICHAT is processed on file with Mrs. Sharp in the main office at least 24 hours in advance.
- 11:36 dismissal
- Halloween parade-costume rules:
- Students arrive to school in costumes, dressed and ready for the day
- No masks, other than approved ones to protect us from COVID, no weapons, no costume props, and no clothing with offensive language or logos. These are all NOT permitted.
- Parents/Families feel free to bring your phone/cameras to capture photos of us parading around the school outside.
- The parade will happen weather-permitting. We will not kindly host an indoor parade across all of our elementary schools, if the weather does not permit for it to take place outside.

Morning Arrival & Dismissal Reminders
* Students should not be playing at the playground in the morning or on the blacktop. Please kindly remind your student.
* Please DO NOT PARK, nor double park on Charlevoix Rd as this is a drop off area during morning arrival and dismissal times. We want to be proactive about this so that parents are not ticketed for parking there, and students are safe to be dropped off.
* Additionally, during morning arrival, let us try to park in the parking spots which tend to be available if you intend to walk your child to the blacktop, and please DO NOT PARK in the drop off circle so that it indeed is a drop off circle for all students to be dropped off safely.
Building Visitors and Volunteers
ATTENTION ALL PARENTS who are interested in volunteering during lunch and/or recess, please call the main office and ask to speak to Ms. Lyon. We would like to reflect a schedule of parent volunteers who are available to support on specific days, along with when we have indoor recess days. We appreciate all of your support!
If you are interested in being a volunteer at Mason, please know that we kindly need an ICHAT form to be completed with the main office staff at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled day. Thank you for your support and understanding!
