OES Family Update
August 8th, 2023
Families,
We are so excited to welcome our students back to the building starting next week. Our staff has been working throughout the summer to prepare for the start of the year. Many of our staff have attended professional development to improve their instruction and/or best meet our students needs, and staff has been in the building throughout the end of July and beginning of this month to ensure their classrooms are ready for students arrival. We appreciate all of the "unseen" hours our staff puts in to provide a high quality student experience. Teachers have begun sending out information on classroom/grade level specific information, but feel free to reach out to your child's homeroom teacher or myself if there is anything we can do to ease the transition back to school.
We hope to see all 1st-6th Graders at Meet The Teacher Night next Tuesday August 15th starting at 5 PM. Our PreK, Kindergarten, and Junior Kindergarten families will meet their teacher during an individual family conference on either Thursday 8/17 or Friday 8/18- this will be communicated to you by your child's teacher if they haven't already.
We look forward to a great year,
Ryan Huels
OES Principal

Pick Up/Drop Off
A common question we get at the beginning of the year is in regards to the drop off procedure. Families are permitted to drop off in 2 ways.
1. Traveling along Hawk Drive to the south of our building and dropping off at 1 of the 2 cross walks. Vehicles should be in the right lane and at a completely stop at the cross walk before their child exits the vehicle into the cross walk. Please do not allow your child to exit the vehicle before the cross walk, in the left lane, or while a vehicle is moving. You may also park in any of our VIP parking spots, spots along Hawk Drive or across the street at the Blackhawk center if you wish to walk with your child to the cross walk.
2. Families may park along Koontz Place to the North of the building off of 13th and 14th Street. Students can walk along one of the walk ways to their designated line up spots (K-3rd on the Jefferson Playground Blacktop, 4th-6th on the Etnyre Blacktop). Familes are welcome to walk with their child to either blacktop, but we do ask that you say your goodbyes and allow your child to join their homeroom line to be ready to go by 8:00.
Bus/Crosswalk Safety
As the year starts, we will begin to see school buses and crossing guards in our community. By law, if a school bus has their Stop Sign posted, all vehicles on either side of the street are to stop to allow children to safely exit the bus. The same applies for any intersection in which a school crossing guard is in the intersection with their stop sign displayed. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we ensure all students get to school safely
School Bullying Law
Recently, the Illinois Legislature passed a law in regards to the reporting and investigation of instances of bullying in schools. https://ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/fulltext.asp?Name=103-0047&GA=103
At Oregon Elementary School, we will be notifying families of those involved of any reports of bullying that we are made aware of. This will first come as a form letter to all parties involved in the report within 24 hours of the claim being made- whether that is the one making the report or the one being reported to be committing the instance of bullying. Our administrative team will then investigate the claim of bullying and report back to those involved with more specific details once our investigation is complete.
If you have any questions regarding this, don't hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Webb or myself.
Volunteers Needed
On August 24th and 25th we need volunteers to pass out prizes students earn for completing the Golden Ticket.
On Friday, September 15th we will have our annual “Day of Awesomeness”. This is the day we celebrate all our hard work in raising money for our school with bounce houses, obstacle courses, games, and a dance party. This is one of the most fun and memorable days for our students! We need volunteers to help supervise activities that day to ensure everyone participates safely while still having fun.
