ALTA VISTA NEWS
JOIN US TONIGHT FOR OPEN HOUSE
The classrooms will be open from 6:00 to 6:45 and the focus will be on teachers and families celebrating this year's students. As much as we start thinking about the next school year in May ... teachers will not be able to meet or chat with future students/parents during Open House. Teachers will be using this time to focus on their current students. Thank you for your understanding.
As our classrooms close at 6:45, a variety of STEAM activities will be available around the campus for an hour. You will find many exciting learning opportunities on the primary playground and in the MakerSpace.
We hope you'll be able to join us tonight.
Alta Vista Family Picnic
This has been an outstanding school year. Alta Vista has so much to be proud of -- our Distinguished School recognition, Home and School Club events, service projects, classroom learning and student exploration. We want YOU to help us celebrate. Join us for an Alta Vista Family Picnic on Tuesday, June 6th at 12:00. Bring a lunch and blanket and enjoy some time with your child.
Lunch time will be the same for ALL Alta Vista students (12:00-12:45 PM) so that you can join them at school for a picnic lunch! Grab your younger students before finding your older students by their classrooms or at the lunch tables. TK and Kindergarten students will be on their playground at 12:00. All other students will be at their classrooms.
Teachers will be sending home invitations via a Google form. Please fill it out right away so that we know who will be joining us and which students might need to join a buddy family at lunch.
We look forward to seeing you on June 6th.
Visitor Badges
With so many wonderful activities happening on campus during the next few weeks, the office will be busy printing out required visitor badges. Be sure to come by early to pick your up if you are attending any events on campus, such as Fifth Grade Promotion or the Alta Vista Family Picnic. You can stop by the office up to one week in advance of special events. Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe.
Lockdown Drill - May 31
The safety of our school community is a top priority. During the course of the school year, we hold various drills to prepare our staff and students in case there is an emergency during the school day. On May 31st, all of our students will be participating in a lockdown drill of the campus.
In order to avoid creating fear or panic in our younger children, we have requested that teachers for grades TK-2nd use the following sample script:
“There might be a time that we will have a situation in school when it will be important for us to stay together in our classrooms and not go outside as we do for a fire drill. There might be a stranger on campus or there could be some other problem in the hallways so it is important for us to stay safely in our rooms until Mrs. Bailey or a police officer tells us that the problem is fixed. Today, we’re going to practice sitting quietly together on the floor with the door and windows closed and the lights out, this is called a lockdown drill.”
Teachers for grades 3-5th will be following the sample script:
“We have a special lockdown drill for locking ourselves in our rooms in case a stranger enters the campus. It is important for us to stay safely in our rooms until Mrs. Bailey or a police officer tells us that the problem is fixed. Today, we’re going to practice sitting quietly together on the floor with the door and windows closed and the lights out.”
Teachers will not bring up the subject of weapons--the emphasis will be on staying safely together in one place until the office decides that it is safe for our students. Using our PA system, I will announce that we are participating in a lockdown drill at 8:30. As soon as we have completed our drill assessment, staff and students will be notified.
We ask parents to use similar language when discussing this issue with their children at home to help prepare them for our lockdown drill, as well as any follow up conversations. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. As always, we thank you for your cooperation.
