Maltby Messenger
March 7th Edition
~A message from the Principal~
Welcome
~A Message from the Principal~
It is hard to believe March has arrived! I hope you are well and thawing out from our chilly winter and cold temperatures! As we continue to see cold temperatures, please remember to remind your children to dress for the weather. The sun is out and it looks so beautiful and warm, but then you step outside and it is quite chilly. We have many coats in the lost and found. If an item has a name on it, we place it inside and deliver it to the classroom. We go through the items about once a month. You are also welcome to come look through the items.
Tonight is our kindergarten information meeting. If you know of a kindergarten student coming to Maltby, please encourage them to attend. They can register tonight. They need a birth certificate and immunization records. We will meet in the library at 6:00pm.
Conferences are just around the corner. Teachers will send out invites. This is an opportunity to share with parents how students are doing. This is also a great time to think about how to finish this year, and think forward to next year. If you receive an invitation to a conference that you would like to change, contact the office.
There are some upcoming board meetings. There are many important topics discussed at these meetings. The next meeting is in the library of Fryelands Elementary, on March 11th at 5:30pm. The first half hour is a board conversation and the official board meeting begins at 6:00pm. Hope to see you there!
We have some new library books in the library! One book students might enjoy is the, “Happy Dreamer,” by Peter Reynolds, and “Soof,” by Sarah Weeks. Both books are beautiful and well written!
Have a great weekend!
Bonnie McKerney
Don't forget to "Spring Forward" this Sunday, March 10th. Set your clocks ahead one hour Sunday morning at 2 am!
Library Happenings
2019-2020 Kindergarten Information Night
Kindergarten Information Night for the 2019-2020 school year is set for Thursday, March 7th at 6:00 pm in our library. If you have an incoming kindergarten student, please make sure to attend this important event. Please be sure to bring your child's immunization records and an original birth certificate for copying in order to register that evening. Children must be 5 years old by August 31, 2019 to qualify for next fall's Kindergarten class. You can call the office at (360)804-3500 if you have any questions.
Family Movie Night
Come out and join us for Family movie night. The movie will begin at 6:30 pm. Pizza, popcorn, water, and juice will be available for purchase. Wondering what the donation is for? We are in need of emergency water for the school and all proceeds will go towards this purchase. This donation is not required for entry.
We don’t want movie night to be restricting, but there are a few ground rules. Please help us with making sure these rules are being followed:
1. Adults must be present with their children.
2. Stay off and do not use the PE mats stacked against the wall.
3. Try not to spill food and keep it close by.
4. Don’t stand in front of others and block others’ view.
5. Don’t run around screaming and distract others.
6. When movie night is over, pick up any garbage and throw it away.

Parents of Transfer Students
3/11 | 5:30 pm
Due to the weather-related cancellation of the February 11, 2019 School Board meeting where families who currently utilize our transfer bus services were invited to share how the discontinuance of transfer buses would impact their family, we have rescheduled the conversation to Monday, March 11, 2019, at 5:30 pm in the Fryelands Elementary library. The School Board will be making their final decision about transfer bus services for next year at their meeting on March 11th. Families are encouraged to share their feedback prior to the start of that meeting. If you are unable to attend the March 11th meeting with the School Board, please share your input with them via email at: schoolboard@monroe.wednet.edu.Carnival Committee Meeting-Volunteers NEEDED!!

Kids Heart Challenge NEWS
Dear Maltby Elementary Families,
We are very proud to partner with the American Heart Association during their 40th year of working with schools. It’s all about having HAPPY and HEALTHY hearts, which I know Maltby Families fully support. This week, students have been learning about their circulatory system by becoming blood cells as they travel through a heart obstacle course. In addition, they have the opportunity to listen to their heartbeat!
This year, students that join our online team are encouraged to take a pledge to:
● Exercise for 60 minutes a day
● Choose water over sugar drinks
● Do a good deed
I am challenging our families to have at least 50 students take the pledge online and go further in raising at least 1 life-saving donation. You can help your child join our online team and take the pledge by visiting our website OR by downloading the “Kids Heart Challenge” app and searching for our school team. Be sure to click on the “Connect to Facebook” button in your online headquarters for a quick and easy way to reach more people with your message of heart health and invite FRIENDS to make a lifesaving donation!
We currently have 37 students that have completed the challenge and we are well on our way to reaching our goal of 50 students! I know we can reach this goal! In addition, ALL Maltby students are invited to attend a Kids Heart Challenge Night at a Seattle Storm Game in June!! The Top Fundraiser at our school will get a special on court experience at the end of the game!!
OUR STATS
- 37 Team members registered
- 17 daily challenges of exercising 60 minutes a day!
- 9 daily challenges of choosing water over sugar drinks.
- 12 daily challenges of doing a good deed.
Our event ends March 15th. Please convert any cash donations into the form of a check, made out to American Heart Association. Please turn in by Friday, March 15th, or donate on-line. So far, the Magnificent Maltby Mustangs have raised over $2500!
Thanks for supporting our school event. Because of you, the American Heart Association can educate our youth on America’s #1 killer, heart disease, and No. 5 killer, stroke. Through our school’s fundraising efforts, we can continue funding lifesaving research, health initiatives, and heart education throughout our local communities.
Thank you!

Late to School?
This is not only a safety measure, but also how the office can adjust their attendance for the day.
Transportation Notes
Has your child lost a jacket lately? Maybe some gloves? Items often get left on the bus and there is no way to identify who they belong to. If you write your child's name, or even their initials on their personal belonging there is a better chance of those items being returned the next day! If they think they left it on the bus and it is not there, check the lost and found in the school. Our bus drivers will bring items left on the bus into the school lost and found if no one claims them. Thank you!!
