Jaguar News

Volume 1, Issue 3 - September 1st, 2017

Dear families,

Just a kind reminder that Monday, September 4th, school will not be in session in recognition of Labor Day. Enjoy the long weekend!

Jaguars for Houston

Our caring Gentry students have been asking how they can help Houston students start school with all the devastation going on around them. It was suggested that a school supply donation drive take place at Gentry to help those in need in the Houston school district.

Please help our students give back to those in need by donating new school supplies. We are working with Houston school officials to ensure that supplies will be delivered to students.

We will be accepting donations next week Tuesday through Friday. Donations can be dropped off at the main office or with Advisory teachers. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.

New Math Teacher at Gentry

Please, welcome Sheila Meny to our Gentry family. Mrs. Meny will be teaching 6th and 7th grade math. This position has been added to alleviate the large class sizes in our math courses, and as a result, some students' schedules will change next week. We will notify those students via Advisory next Wednesday, once we have completed the schedule changes. Mrs. Meny will start teaching on Thursday after spending a couple of days observing the students and teachers at Gentry.

We hope for a smooth transition, as Mrs. Meny will be working closely with the rest of the math department both in content and pacing. Please, do not hesitate to contact the counseling department should you have any questions.

Media Center Minute

The Gentry Media Center wants to welcome all students to the new school year. All students have a weekly checkout day when they come to the media center with their English class to check out and return books. All books have a “date due” slip in the front informing you of the date your library book is due. Most books are checked out for 2 weeks and you can renew as necessary. We started seeing students the first day of school and were so excited to see your smiling faces and love for reading! Here are the open hours you can visit the media center this year.

- Morning Study Hall – 7:05 am – 7:21 am
(passes given out by teachers in the hall/gym)

- Before Class – 7:21 am – 7:30am

(no pass needed, but don’t be late to class)

- Periods 2 – 8 with a pass from your teacher

- After school from 2:35 pm – 3:00 pm
(no pass needed)

These are the times that you can visit the media center for browsing, checking out, returning books, printing, getting iPad help or using the media center computers.

Football Game Tonight

Today, Friday September 1st, Rock Bridge is hosting Battle High School in Varsity Football. Both schools are currently undefeated and state ranked. We are anticipating a very large crowd for this game. Unfortunately, the stadium construction work is still far from being complete. While enough progress has been made to allow Rock Bridge to host the game, there is still much work to be done and many areas of the facility are still large, active construction zones. Consequently, for the safety, security, and viewing pleasure of all patrons we request that all Gentry students planning to attend the game are accompanied by an adult at all times. We will further expect that all students (middle and high school) to be in the bleachers during the game and not congregating on the concourse, near concession stand, etc… Thanks for your cooperation!

PTSA Meeting

Please, join us for the first PTSA meeting of the year, which will be on September 6th at 6:00 p.m. in the Media Center.

Riding the Bus with a Friend

We realize that occasionally your student will need to ride the bus home with a friend. If this is the case, we will need for you as the parent to write a note stating that your child has permission to do so. Please include in your note: the date your child will be riding, who your child will be riding with and that student’s bus number. Instruct your child to bring that note into the main office on the day that they will be riding with a friend and we will

in turn issue your student a buss pass that they can give to the driver to be permitted to ride.

Lunch at Gentry

Parents are always welcome to enjoy an occasional lunch at Gentry with their student, but before you visit we thought you would like a better understanding of our lunchtime guidelines. Our guidelines below are quite simple and by being aware of them we can hopefully alleviate undo parental and student stress on the day of your lunchtime visit.

  • You are welcome to purchase a school lunch through the student lunch line. Our cashiers only accept cash, however, and are unable to make change due to our large student population. An adult school lunch costs $ 3.75.
  • If you wish to carry a lunch in on the day of your visit be sure that the lunch you are bringing in is only for you and your child to share. Due to the overall health concerns of our student population, we cannot have a parent share lunch items or bring in a lunch for any other student other than their own child.
  • Lastly, we do not accept any lunch time food deliveries from local food delivery companies for students.
