Can 95% of children learn to read?
Recent studies seem to back up this commonly quoted statistic. Are 95% of your students learning to read? This article may help you understand the statistics and how the findings in this study can influence our instructional practice.
Micro Moves to Strengthen Intervention
Language Live
- Each unit has 10 Text Training lessons and four Word Training lessons.
- Each Text Training lesson is designed to take 45 minutes. Follow the correct pacing for your level, unit, and lesson.
- Use EVERY minute you have with the students to teach. We want to get them back to grade level as quickly as possible. Even if there are five minutes left, roll right into the next lesson.
- Get the students involved with the pacing. Set a timer so the whole class knows how much time you have for that section of the lesson.
- Don’t attempt to complete every question on every page. The Interactive Text (Workbook) is not meant to be done like a traditional style workbook where all questions are done and then checked. It’s meant to be used as an engagement tool within the allotted lesson time.
S.P.I.R.E.
- S.P.I.R.E. (Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence) was written by an Orton-Gillingham Fellow. It is a high quality, Orton-Gillingham-based reading program created specifically to teach children with characteristics of Dyslexia how to read.
- The S.P.I.R.E. reading system uses all of the sensory channels. Thus, if you haven’t had specific training in Orton-Gillingham methods or multisensory instruction, you may want to watch this tutorial.
- You must be sure to incorporate the multi-sensory aspects of the lessons into your teaching. If you don’t incorporate the multisensory activities into your teaching, the program is not likely to work.
- Teaching your students to a point of mastery for each phoneme is also essential. Mastery means students can immediately and automatically respond to prompts without hesitating to think about what his response should be. Mastery is demonstrated when the child automatically responds. Don't forget to use the Quick Checks after each lesson as well!
Building Fact Fluency
- "Number routines are not a time to teach, they are a time to listen." ~Build Math Minds
- Listening to the information your students are saying and the way in which they are responding to your number routine gives you a deeper understanding of the level of number sense among your students.
- Pay attention to the positives. Notice the things your students know and help them build connections. When you focus on what they don't know and identifying their gaps, you will be tempted to teach rather than listen and facilitate.
- Number Routines are just what they are called... ROUTINES. This means that after initial exposure, directions and procedures don't have to be taught over and over again. They are simple low-floor/high-ceiling activities accessible to ALL.
- Number Routines do not have to connect to the content students are learning each day.
- The purpose of the Number Routines in the Building Fact Fluency Kit by Graham Fletcher and Tracy Johnston Zager is to empower students to "see how number facts connect to a wide variety of mathematical situations, explore the properties of operations, and build a foundation of strategies they can draw from efficiently and with confidence."
Educator Spotlight - Gibbs Middle School
Ashley Burnette has been implementing the system of Individualized Learning Pathways (ILPs) with her math intervention students with integrity since the Fall of 2019. Every year she has made adjustments and continued to believe in the power of the system. Her results this year are phenomenal! 67% of the students who began the year in Math Intervention have exited the program. 50% of her 8th grade students who began the year in Math Intervention have exited the program.
Michelle Browning joined the Math RTI team at Gibbs Middle in the Fall of 2021. From the minute she started, she has been committed to ensuring her students succeed by identifying their deficits and targeting each student's unique learning needs through the effective implementation of ILPs. This year Michelle worked with 6th grade students in Math RTI, and she is making a very positive impact. 46% of her students who began the year in RTI have made positive tier growth or exited the program entirely!
The impact these educators are making on their students' growth in mathematics is impressive. They are helping these students bust down the barriers that are holding them back from accessing their grade level content. Overall, these ladies have supported students so well that 55% of all students who started the 22-23 school year in Math RTI have exited the program!!!
Thank you for your dedication to the students at Gibbs Middle School and for all of your hard work.

Data Meetings
- Data Meeting Guidance This quick reference guide can help keep you on track!
- Please share meeting dates with your region's RTI2 Facilitator
- Fidelity Check Direct Observations should be ongoing. 2x per semester for T2 and 3x per semester for T3.
- Check student plans to be sure they accurately reflect the student's current tier and intervention program- choices of interventions have changed to reflect the updated offerings from the RTI2 department.
- If you need a refresher for putting information into ASPEN, join our canvas course here.
- Always print Progress Reports after the data meeting and attach the progress monitoring graph from aimswebplus. These reports are sent home to parents.
- All student plans will roll over to the next year, so be sure to check that they are accurate before the end of this school year.
