SEL Lessons on Change
Hello D103 families,
Today, our students participated in Social Emotional Learning classroom discussions about the transition to mask optional/recommended environments. The learning activities started with a video from their principals discussing that the changes will occur. Students discussed in their classrooms that change is a natural part of our lives, that families will decide if students will wear a mask or not, and the importance of respecting others' choices. Students then reflected on how they felt about the changes and provided that information to their teachers. Teachers will use those responses to follow up with students who are feeling worried or anxious about the mask optional change to help them feel more at ease in school.
This day was an important one for your child to learn about the changes to come. Please take a moment and discuss with your child how they are feeling. Below are the resources we sent on Monday to help you with the conversation.
Answer questions honestly: “Do I still need to wear a mask?” “Why isn’t my friend wearing a mask?” It’s okay to explain to children that everyone has a choice. Some people do not want to explain their reasons because they are personal. Some students may choose to wear a mask, while others don’t.
Talk about safety practices: Explain the reasoning behind continued safety measures. For example, You can tell them, “It’s important to wash your hands to keep you and everyone healthy so everyone can keep coming to school.”
Focus on mental wellness: Spend time talking about how students are feeling. Let them know it’s ok to talk to you, a teacher or another trusted adult about how they are doing.
Additional resources you can use as a family to talk about the upcoming changes are linked below:
Thank you for your partnership as we prepare for the transitions ahead.
