Principal Meet and Greet/Open House (5pm - 6pm)
We will be hosting three sessions of a Principal Meet & Greet/Open House from 5pm -6pm on February 22nd, March 1st, and March 3rd. This is an opportunity for parents to meet Wiley’s new principal and see our amazing new building. This is also a chance to highlight some of the work we’ve done and allow parents the opportunity to ask questions. Parents are invited to one of the three sessions based on their child's last name (2/22 ACC - HEA, 3/1 HER - PIC, and 3/3 POP - ZIE). During the session parents will have the opportunity to engage in four rotations throughout the building. In each section there will be a brief overview or introduction of the space and an opportunity to explore and ask questions. Stay tuned for more information!
Educational leave - A request for educational leave should be made at least three weeks in advance. The Wake County Board of Education Policy 6000 requires advanced permission for excused absences for educational purposes. The request will be denied if the cumulative effect of absences will substantially interfere with the education of the student. For an excused absence for educational reasons, the intent of the experience should have been educational from the outset and comparable to that which the student would have experienced in school. Family trips and vacations that were not designed, initially, to be educational will not be excused. Absences will be marked excused once the assigned tasks have been presented.

Boosterthon Fun Run
We are excited to kick off our Wiley Elementary Fun Run on 3/9. Our goal is to raise $25,000 for global innovations and community connections: tools and experiences that facilitate innovative teaching, global competence, and community connections and to strengthen our school community.
Our school has always relied on fundraising to provide exceptional opportunities to enhance student learning. And this year, we have more needs than we’ve ever had before, which means we need your support more than ever.
We completely understand if your family is not in a position to financially support the school right now. You can still be involved by simply SHARING about our fundraiser with friends and extended family online at mybooster.com. Sharing IS supporting!
Just as we worked to safely return to school this year, we are also safely hosting this essential fundraiser based on our school’s current guidelines. We’ll send more details, as we get closer to our kick-off.
Key dates to remember:
• Registration Opens - 2/24-Register on MYBOOSTER.COM
• Donating Starts - 3/2
• Fundraiser Kick Off - 3/9
• Event Day - 3/17 SAVE THE DATE!
We are grateful for our Wiley Elementary family! Thank you for your support this year. We all need it!
Take Action with Wiley Wake Up and Read!
Wiley is excited to be participating in the WAKE Up and Read Book Drive! We will be collecting new and gently-read books for babies to children 12 years of age from February 7th to February 28th.
WAKE Up and Read is a community coalition committed to ensuring each and every child - regardless of race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status - is reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade. They believe that literacy is a right and all children need access to high quality books. Building home libraries is one of their biggest initiatives and they need our support!
Good Donation Books Include:
new or gently-read books for babies & children up to age 12
board, picture, nonfiction, or chapter books
books that reflect the diversity of our community
books that children and families will be proud to own, curl up with, and want to read again & again
Even if you don’t have any children’s books to bring in, you can purchase books to support the drive at local retailers or check out the WAKE Up and Read Wish List.
To learn more about WAKE Up and Read, please visit www.wakeupandread.org, and follow WAKE Up and Read on Facebook and Twitter.
Meal benefits
Parents, please consider applying for meal benefits as soon as possible . By submitting a qualifying application, families will also support the district in qualifying for additional funds to support students and learning! Also, the NC Department of Health & Human Services is collecting student free and reduced lunch and attendance data from WCPSS to determine any additional Pandemic Electronic Benefits (P-EBT) that will be issued in the coming months! By not applying for these meal benefits, you will miss the potential opportunity to receive direct P-EBT funds for your family!
Yes, meals will still be free for all students through June 2022 but we still need you to complete a meal benefits application so our school can be eligible for this extra education funding next school year. Also, this ensures your student is covered for the first few weeks of school next year. Information about applying for Meal Benefits can be found at www.wcpss.net/meals. Help our school continue to receive this funding by completing an application online at MySchoolApps.com. Paper applications can be requested by calling 919-588-3535.

News from our Wiley Foundation

It’s such a treat to see all the names of students and other friends of Wiley on the bricks along the walkway to the school’s entrance, and it would be even better to see more each year! You can purchase commemorative bricks to celebrate the experience of alumni, students, neighbors, businesses, or even yourself! Anyone Wiley has touched and encouraged over the years is welcome! The bricks will honor Wiley’s past, and provide for its future; proceeds will help support the Wiley Elementary Foundation, which is committed to providing resources to help fund positions crucial to sustaining Wiley’s award-winning International Studies Magnet program.
Bricks purchased by March 4th, will be installed this spring and ready for viewing.

News from the Cecilia Rawlins Fund
The Cecilia Rawlins Fund supports Wiley students and families in need by providing food through the BackPack Buddies program, funds for one-time rent assistance, utility bill payment, gas cards, and assistance moving from temporary to permanent housing.
This year, families needing assistance at Wiley have remained at a record-high number with 52 students participating in the BackPack Buddies program. The BackPack Buddies program is funded by CRF in partnership with Inter-faith Food Shuttle. Every Friday, backpacks filled with balanced meals are sent home to students and their families who are at risk of hunger.
In addition to BackPack Buddies, CRF also assisted a family moving from homelessness to permanent housing this Fall and provided grocery and Walmart gift cards to help with food costs over holidays and breaks for our families.
Since the beginning of this school year, CRF has dispersed over $18,000 to Wiley families in need. CRF would not be able to provide this support without the generous donations of our Wiley and extended community.
With the need ongoing, we are looking ahead to Spring and Summer breaks as well. Please consider supporting our own Wiley community in 2022. All it takes to sponsor a BackPack Buddy for the remainder of the school year is $131.25 and every donation counts. To donate, click here or visit our website, www.rawlinsfund.org and click on donate.

¡Actúa con Wiley Wake Up and Read!
Para saber más sobre WAKE Up and Read, visite www.wakeupandread.org, y siga a WAKE Up and Read en Facebook y Twitter.
