Brief Background
Lincoln really wanted to end slavery in the states his Emancipation Proclamation didn't quite get the job done. He really pushed this idea to the House by making it part of the Republican platform in the upcoming election.
Passed on December 6, 1854
Why is it still important?
It makes slavery completely illegal in the United States. People cannot be forced to work for someone or to have a job that they have no interest in.
