From School Administration

It is wonderful to see the progress of our students as they access instruction and show what they know using Canvas, Pear Deck, Google Meet, and more. We were so proud of our students during MAP over the past two weeks.

Most students are actively engaged daily in our live instruction and with their asynchronous work. We also want to note that many are engaged with their camera on and participating in class discussions appropriately. The teachers, paraeducators, support staff, and student assistants are working diligently to create meaningful lessons that keep students on their toes! We are very proud to be working with such a dedicated group of educators and students.

Keep up the hard work!

Updates to School Meals

A stopgap U.S. government funding bill signed into law last Thursday, which includes almost $8 billion in nutrition assistance, allows USDA to extend the meal waivers, previously due to expire at the end of December, through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Thus, HCPSS will be able to provide meals at no cost to any HCPSS student, and all children 18 and under, through the entire school year, assuming continued availability of USDA funding.

As of Monday, October 12, all HCPSS added a snack and dinner to each weekday meal, in addition to breakfast and lunch already being served. Additionally, weekend meals will be included with meals provided on Fridays, and in pre-ordered meals picked up on Thursdays.

HCPSS also has adjusted the pre-order process. Meals for multiple days need to be pre-ordered at least two days in advance for pickup on Mondays and Thursdays. Pre-order meal pickups will be offered only on those two days, to enable Food and Nutrition Services to improve service and efficiency while balancing staffing and food resources.

Full details on HCPSS student meal offerings can be found online.

NATIONAL PTA REFLECTIONS Creative Arts Recognition Program

The National PTA Reflections Arts Recognition Program is a program designed to inspire and celebrate your kid’s creativity. To participate, students create a piece of art in any of 6 different categories that reflect this year’s theme, “I Matter Because…”. Every student who enters receives a certificate celebrating their work! Each artwork is evaluated on interpretation of the theme, creativity, and artistic merit. Reflections is not just for “artsy” kids - it’s for EVERY kid!

And this is a great year for kids to think about why they matter! Click here for a video about Reflections at CCES this year!

  1. Reflect on the theme “I Matter Because….” and create an original work in one (or more!) of the following categories (click on the hyperlinks for more information about each):

  1. Fill out an Entry Form, and be sure to include your Artist’s Statement, which is how your artwork connects to the theme (50% of your score from the judges).

  1. Turn in your artwork and entry form to the box in front of Clemens Crossing by November 24, 2020! OR, if your submission is electronic, please email it to me:

Artwork will be judged in 3 categories:

Entries will be reviewed by experienced arts and education judges. All participants will be celebrated with certificates of participation, the top three entries will receive ribbons and the first place entry will receive a medal. The top three entries in each category will move on to the Howard County Reflections Contest; the top three County entries will move on to the Maryland State Reflections Contest, and State winners in each category will compete in the National PTA Reflections Contest.

EVERY artwork will be celebrated!

Family Survey for Second Semester Planning

HCPSS staff are currently evaluating possibilities for in-person instructional options for the second semester, which begins February 1, 2021.

Please look in your email for the survey. HCPSS is gathering data on whether families intend to send their student(s) back to school or continue fully virtual learning through the end of the current school year. No decision has been made regarding the learning format for the second semester. The data from this form will facilitate planning and is not a commitment for the second semester. This information will assist the Board and HCPSS leadership during discussions about possible models for the second semester.

Families will have the opportunity to formally select a learning option following the Board's deliberation and final decision on second semester plans.

The Pandemic Games - Week 2

For the 2nd installment of the Pandemic Games, we gave away three gift cards donated by our amazing families. A $25 Giant Gift Card was offered to the staff member that has been working for the Howard County Public School System the longest. A $20 Visa gift card was offered to the staff member that has visited the most US States and/or US Territories. And finally a $20 Visa gift card was offered to the staff member that has visited the most countries. After collecting all the entries, here are the results!

Mrs. Rogers has been working for the HCPSS the longest: 36 Years! (Mrs. Marshall was a close 2nd with 35 years!)

Mrs. Hodgins technically won both of the remaining categories with 37 States/US territories visited and 19 countries visited! But since she is a kindergarten teacher, we know that she knows how to share. So she will receive the prize for most countries visited, and the last gift card will go to our 2nd place winner for most states visited: Mrs. Cohen with 32 states!

Thank you to all the staff that participated and to all the families that donated. Our next game is coming soon! For questions or to donate, please email Rachael Kelly and Raghavi Patel at

Book check-out

The Clemens Crossing Library Media Center is now open for students to check out books! Please discuss this with your student if you would like to take advantage of this service. Check your student's Library Media course to learn how to place holds on books. Mrs. Marshall and Mrs. Seamonson will locate those books and sign them out to the students. Labeled books are available for pickup outside the school's front doors between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM each school day.

Students may borrow 1, 2, or 3 books at a time.

There is a labeled book return bin outside the school's front doors for book returns. Please return books within two weeks. There are no late fees.

Returned books are quarantined for a week before returning to circulation.

Books that were borrowed in the spring may also be returned to the bin outside the front doors. Reminder notes will be emailed home soon.

Please email Mrs. Marshall with any questions and please be patient as we work out these new ways of putting books into students' hands.

Read every day!

CCES Virtual Community Outreach

We are looking forward to our first virtual community outreach meeting next week. Our first meeting will take place Monday, Wednesday, October 19th at 4:30. We will discuss how to support your child's social-emotional needs during virtual learning. To join the group, use the Google Meet Code: cces-community. Please use your child's Chromebook to log on. All are welcome!

Information Worth Repeating

Intent to Participate in Hybrid In-Person Instruction; Survey Open Through 4 p.m., October 23

Español / 中文 / 한국어

The Howard County Public School System and Board of Education are evaluating possibilities for a hybrid instructional model for the second semester, beginning February 1, 2021, which could include opportunities for in-person instruction. A hybrid model could provide an option for parents/guardians to send their child to school part of the week and learn virtually for the remainder of the week.

This fall, there will be significant public discussion and consideration around the second semester. At this time, HCPSS is seeking to understand families’ intentions regarding sending their students back to school, if that option becomes available, or continuing fully virtual learning. Please see the directions below for accessing this questionnaire. Please note, this is separate from the small group instruction survey that some families have received. Additionally, it is crucial for planning to know if students who qualify to receive bus service would use it. Parent/guardian response is not a commitment for the second semester; you will be able to change your decision when plans for the second semester are finalized. Your intention at this time will help facilitate planning. Please complete the form by 4 p.m., Friday, October 23. Contact your school if you require assistance in completing the form.

To complete the form:

  1. Log in to HCPSS Connect
  2. Select More Options from the left panel
  3. Select Intent to Participate in Hybrid In-Person Instruction from the middle of the page
  4. Complete the questions in the form for each child and select “Save”

CCES PTA Read-a-thon

Our CCES PTA Read-A-Thon will run October 7 - 16! Please consider asking your extended family and friends to sponsor your child in the Read-a-thon. 100% of the proceeds benefit the CCES PTA and the many programs that enrich the students, support our teachers, and build lasting memories.

The homeroom with the most participation (how many kids participated and submitted forms) will earn a Starbucks gift card for their teacher and a Roaring Event for each student! A Roaring Event is awarded to students with exemplary ROARing behavior. It entitles the student to 2 ROAR tickets. ROAR tickets can be redeemed for special prizes.

We have two options for submitting donations and pledges: our Read-a-thon webpage or printed out and mailed to the school (forms attached below).
All forms and donations are due by Friday, October 23. Thanks for your support!

Join the PTA – Family Membership

PTA Membership will allow you to be active with the PTA and enjoy discounts with Maryland PTA partners. Most of all, your membership dues support the many programs we offer to the CCES community. While we encourage all of our families to be involved with PTA, membership does not obligate you to volunteer your time.

After trying many fundraisers over the years, the CCES PTA’s major fundraiser is a direct donation program (and later in the fall, a Read-a-thon). Rather than sell wrapping paper or other merchandise, we ask each family to contribute $50 in addition to their membership dues to support the programs we sponsor throughout the year.

To join the Clemens Crossing PTA, please fill out the form below and pay the membership dues (plus any donation you choose to give) through the PayPal link that follows. If you prefer to pay by check, please contact our membership chair, c/o
