JOB DESCRIPTION
Elementary School Counselor
DEPARTMENT: Elementary School
REPORTS TO: ES Principal
WORK DAYS: Full Time
POSITION SUMMARY:
Counselor utilizes leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic and personal/social development of all students.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree and certification in school counseling preferred
May also consider candidates with a commensurate degree in a related field of study and a willingness to pursue counseling certification or candidates with an elementary teaching certificate and a willingness to pursue counseling certification.
DUTIES:
- Plan, organize and deliver a comprehensive school guidance and counseling program. Provide developmentally appropriate direct instruction in a variety of settings for students in grades K-5. Topics may include suicide awareness, bully prevention, social skills development, etc.
Participate or lead the building’s Positive Behavior Intervention and Support program. This will include analyzing or deconstructing problematic behaviors and developing or shaping alternatives using a competing pathways model. In addition, duties will include promoting and instructing around the PBIS model on a building wide basis.
Lead, manage and facilitate the building Child Study Team; a problem solving resource for teachers.
Develop behavior management programs and reinforcement schedules, teach and model conflict resolution skills, provide physical interventions with students when necessary to maintain student/building safety and collaborate with other specialists in arranging support services for students.
Provide structure or leadership in shaping student recess to be an opportunity for kids to demonstrate prosocial behaviors. When needed, be able to provide instruction or intervention in this setting.
Counsel individuals and small groups of students toward social and emotional growth; conduct structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions in systematic response to identified needs of individuals or groups of students.
Consult with and train teachers, parents, and staff regarding needs of elementary school students; participate in staffing; conduct in-service programs for faculty; conduct conferences with teachers, parents, and students; assist families with school-related problems.
Refer children with problems and their parents to special programs, specialists and outside agencies; consult and coordinate with district and community specialists, such as school nurses, administrators, psychologists, service agencies, and physicians.
Participate in and facilitate the intervention team process; assume an active role in designing, implementing, monitoring of intervention team meetings, and writing summaries of meetings and intervention plans.
Have the ability and desire to work as part of a growing team. Willingness to objectively look at data or accept feedback in an effort to improve personnel practices as well as team efficiency.
Use available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program.
Pursue continuous professional growth; attend district sponsored staff development offerings; join associations; read professional journals and contribute to professional literature; attend relevant workshops and conferences sponsored by professional organizations.
EDUCATION:
Must have valid Washington State ESA Certificate.
MANDATORY CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background check.
Successful Washington State Sexual Misconduct clearance.
Completion of Federal I-9, Employment Verification Eligibility form.
