Sherwood Spirit
October 2018
From Mr. Walerstein's Desk
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Greetings! We are now entering autumn, the leaves are changing, the air is getting crisper, and we are settling in for a great school year. The Sherwood staff and I would like to thank all of you for attending our Meet the Teacher Night on September 19th; we hope that you walked away with a strong foundation for a relationship between home and school.
Our new house system is in full swing, and we had an amazing house kickoff ceremony. The students had unbelievable energy, and were excited to be given their house assignments. The house system is essentially a schoolwide PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) project. The students are rewarded when caught doing the right thing, and given raffle tickets. Each week the raffle tickets are tallied, and whichever house gets the most tickets is rewarded the most points for the week. The current points standings (as of (10/1) are listed below:
1. Dignatio
2. Respectus
3. Virtus
4. Honestas
In September, students also had a review of our building expectations and Code of Conduct. Ms. Tramaglini and I visited each class, discussed the District Code of Conduct and also reviewed the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Students will continue to learn about the 7 Habits with their classroom teachers as the year progresses. Please discuss the 7 Habits with your children; you can use the dedicated section in your child's planner to help you! There are also 7 Habits parents guides attached below for your perusal (TLIM Parent Guide attached below this section).
This month, we have several activities for your children. On October 4, our PTA is hosting a "Sock Hop" from 6:30-8:00 pm. We hope to see many students there. We will also host our fall book fair October 16-17; there will be an evening event on the 17th to coincide with our first PTA meeting of the year. This month we also celebrate Red Ribbon Week; this year's theme is Love Yourself. Be Smart, Be Active, Be Healthy! We will have activities centered around making positive choices which coincides with Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw.
We are looking forward to a productive month.
Warmest Regards,
Chad Walerstein

PTA NEWS
What a great start to the new year! It was so nice to meet many of the new second graders at our Second Grade Welcome Night. We hope you had a great time! A very special thank you to our BINGO callers who helped make this night so much fun.
October is shaping up to be a busy month at Sherwood. Please join us for our Fall Family Fun Night on Friday October 4th. It is a Sock Hop from 6:30 - 8:00 pm in the SES gymnasium. There will be a DJ and games! Don't forget to wear your craziest socks!
Please join us at Coyle's Ice Cream in Islip on Wednesday, October 2nd from 4 pm to 8 pm. A portion of all sales will be donated back to Sherwood PTA. What a wonderful way to support our local community and the PTA!
Kid-Stuff coupon books will be going home soon. There are some great savings in the book this year. These books must be returned if you are not able to purchase it. The Kid Stuff App is included with every book purchased. This is a great fundraiser for our school. We earn 50% for every coupon book sold.
Our Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be on October 16th during school hours, and October 17th during the evening and school hours. It's time to "Let your Imagination Grow" with new books. Look for more information about the book fair to be coming home in the beginning of October. Please look out for the Sign Up Genius. . .help is always needed.
Please consider joining the PTA! Throughout the year, the PTA will provide many programs and events for your kids that will be fun and educational. Your PTA membership helps fund these programs. It will also help you stay up to date on PTA and other school events throughout the year. There are many opportunities to volunteer. We are always open to new suggestions, new faces and lots of helping hands. Remember, no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.
Our first PTA meeting is on October 17th in the Sherwood Library. New this year, we have babysitting during our meeting so more members can attend. We will also be having an evening book fair that night. Please join us as we plan a wonderful year ahead for our Sherwood Students.
