Message from the Principal . . .
The 4th Annual STEM Conference was a huge success and LWIT/LWTHS teachers and students received many compliments and gratitude from the audience members for sharing their expertise. Eileen Schoenknecht, Pam Wilkin, Bruce Peters and students responded when a code blue was called on Baby Hal and were able to resuscitate him and left workshop attendees fascinated by the use of human simulators in the health field. A Palmetto Ridge student was so impressed that she extended a personal invitation for staff and students to attend their Spring STEM Career event. You could see teachers have “aha” moments as Tiffany Hall and Jackie Hagerman presented and proudly wore their “Bridging the Great Divide between English and Math” t-shirts designed by a 10th grade student. Teachers and administrators were in “awe” as Tara Barr and Dave Gabriel shared the various ways they integrate technology into the curriculum and engage students. If you have not seen how Tara and Dave use Symbaloo to save web content they frequently use in order to help them organize content and save time, ask them to share a webmix with you. Also, if you are interested in learning how to use Symaloo, make sure to attend the upcoming Tech Tuesday.
Ariel, Eileen, and I tweeted away as Discovey Education keynote speaker, Cindy Moss, talked about STEM careers which do not require 4 year degrees, such as surgical technology . Closing Speaker, Patti Duncan, talked about how STEM is embedded throughout many subjects including culinary and about the importance of integrating technology.
By the end of the conference, due to our tweets, people knew LWIT/LWTHS was in the house and an invitation to attend the upcoming Den Streamathon at LWIT on October 25th was extended to all. I am ready to “Feel the Den Funk” and have my platform shoes and funky hat ready. If you have not seen the video to promote the event, coordinated by Marie Coleman, videotaped by Rick Ponton and his students, and performed by the LW Campus Village People , check it out. Discovery Education staff enjoyed it so much they shared it nationwide via their Facebook, Twitter and Streamathon web page.
