Safety Drills
Throughout the year we practice different safety drills so in the event of an emergency everyone knows what to do in the event there is an actual emergency.
Fire drills are done monthly. When the alarm, which is very loud, goes off, we all head outside until the building is cleared. Impressively, we are able to move 470 students out of the building in a minute and a half!
We practice our tornado drill quarterly. The drill is announced over the intercom and student and staff quickly move to their identified spot in the hallway and sit quietly listening for instructions. This drill usually takes under a minute for students to move to their spot where they sit quietly until the building is checked and the all clear announcement is heard.
Lockdown drills are done once a quarter. While one might think this drill would be scary for students, the staff and I keep it developmentally appropriate for our students. We simply state that we are practicing a lockdown drill, move to our designated spots and sit quietly until the building is secured. Once the building is secured, an all clear is announced and instruction resumes.
