January Scholarships
Hampton Roads Global Commerce Council- $1000. Write a 600-1,000 word essay on the following topic, “How will current transportation infrastructure, the new transportation funding legislation, and planned tolls in Virginia impact local and global commerce in Hampton Roads?” Go to Scholarship Central or www.hrgcc.org for more info. Applications and essays must be received by January 6th. *DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JANUARY 24TH!
Ron Brown Scholars Program- Application, transcript, letters of recommendation, school profile, essay. Applicants must be African-American seniors, excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential, make an impact on community, demonstrate financial need, must be eligible or accepted for admission to accredited institution of higher learning, and citizen of US. All parts of application must be sent in one package. Go to http://www.ronbrown.org/Apply/ApplicationDownload.aspx for more information. Deadline is January 9th.
GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship- All applications must be completed online. Applicants must be seniors who demonstrate leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship. They must also have at least a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate financial need, and be American Citizens who plan to attend a four-year college or university. This award honors former President Ronald Reagan. See Scholarship Central or http://www.reaganfoundation.org/ge-rfscholarships.aspx for details. Deadline is January 9th.
Tidewater Chapter Tuskegee Airmen Inc. Scholarship- Applicants must be students of accredited high schools who have graduated or will graduate in the school year 2013-14. Applying students must have a 3.0 GPA. Applicant must submit a two page essay containing a biographical sketch, educational aspirations, career goals, and an explanation of why financial aid is essential. Additionally, the applicant must include a single page essay entitled The Tuskegee Airmen which reflects an overview of their history. Essays must be typed, double-spaced with one-inch margins on 8.5 x 11 paper. A copy of parents latest IRS Form 1040 (through adjusted gross income line) must be included in application package. Gates Millennium Scholars Program- Scholarship is available to seniors of minority heritage who have a 3.3 GPA or higher as well as demonstrated leadership through participation in community services or activities. Applicants must also meet Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. The application is online for you to fill out. There are 3 parts to it (nominee, nominator & recommender). Please see Mrs. Kressel for help with this application-it is lengthy, but WORTH IT! See http://www.gmsp.org for details. Postmark deadline is January 15, 2014.
Radford University-Theatre & Cinema Students- up to $12,000. 2 Scholarships for students with a 3.3 GPA, combined 1100 SAT/24 ACT, and outstanding level of achievement in theatre through audition or portfolio. Submit application to Radford by January 25th.
Virginia PTA Citizenship Essay Contest- $1000. 2013-2014 theme is “Effecting Change…Starting with ME.” 9th – 12th graders. Must write a minimum of 750 words, typed and double-spaced. See Mrs. Kressel for details and application. Or go to http://vapta.org/. Deadline to submit to Mrs. Kressel is January 31st.
**Virginia Tech Pamplin Leader Award- $5,000. Seniors with a 3.8 GPA AND who rank in the top 10% who have applied to Tech, please pick up an application from Mrs. Kressel. Application & letter of recommendation required. **Salem can only submit ONE nomination, so the deadline to turn into Mrs. Kressel is Friday, January 31st, even though application deadline states February 7th.
February Scholarships
Shirley Rabb Winston Scholarship in Voice- Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 22; must submit a vocal performance on DVD; must demonstrate a serious commitment to their art by providing a written statement of their career plans for the future; and must specify the mode of further study - private study, special training, or for personal advancement in the applicant's future career. See Scholarship Central for details. Deadline to be RECEIVED is February 1st.
American Society of Military Comptrollers- $500-$1500. Applicants must be a high school student with interest in financial management. Provide a 250 word essay addressing career and academic goals and financial needs. You must be in upper 1/2 of graduating class and provide two letters of recommendation. Go to http://asmchrvascholarships.wordpress.com. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is February 1st.
Naomi Winston Scholarship in Art- Applicants must be a U.S. States citizen; between the ages of 16 and 22; must demonstrate a serious commitment to his or her art by stating career plans in writing, as well as immediate personal plans for further study; and must submit a CD and prints of his or her works to a chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline to be RECEIVED is February 3rd.
Optimist International Essay Contest- This contest is open to students under the age of 19 that have not graduated from high school or the equivalent. No minimum age or grade level requirement. Interested students should submit 700-800 word essays on the assigned topic - How Dreams Lead to Success - to the Optimist Club of Virginia Beach for club level judging not later than February 7, 2014. Virginia Beach Optimist Club contest winners progress to the Virginia Capital District level. Prizes are a medallion at the club level, and plaque and a $2,500 scholarship at the District level. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline to be RECEIVED is February 7th.
**Charles Barker Automotive Scholarship- $500. Applicants must be seniors who demonstrate a dedication to community involvement and must be planning to attend a post-secondary school. See Mrs. Kressel or Scholarship Central for the application. Deadline is Feb. 14th. **-Specifically for Salem High Student!
All Saints' Scholarship Fund- Grant awards ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 are available to qualified graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have a strong high school academic record as well as a record of participation in other school and community activities which demonstrate strength of character and commitment. Financial need is also a factor in choosing award recipients. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is February 14th.
Chi Omicron Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.- Dyanne Buffington Memorial Scholarship- Applicants must be a graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 2.8 or better; must be planning to attend a two or four year college or university in the fall; submit application completely filled out with an essay attached; must be postmarked by February 21, 2014; and submit an essay - please attached for topics. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is February 21st.
**Tidewater Community College Outstanding High School Graduate Award- Applicants must be 2013 graduate; have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; and complete application. Four Semesters will be paid at TCC and it is one scholarship per high school. The deadline is February 24th at 5pm, however, if you’d like Mrs. Kressel to take your application to TCC for you, please turn it in by Friday, February 21st. **-Specifically for Salem High Student!
VSGA-VIP Scholarship Foundation- Must be senior who has an interest in golf who will be attending college in Virginia. Go to scholarships.VSGA.org for more info. Deadline is February 24th.
Hampton Roads Community Foundation- One application for SEVERAL Scholarships!! This is a great scholarship. See Mrs. Kressel or Scholarship Central for application. Deadline for the office to receive your application is February 28th!
