Office Hours

Every Tuesday from 3:15-4:00 I have what I refer to as office hours. This is a time when students may come in and begin their homework, work on the script or a reassessment video, or just receive additional help. This week we had several students in for the office hours and many finished all their math homework during that time. If your child wants to attend it is open for all. Below are some expectations for all who come. The purpose of sharing these are to make it clear that this time is for understanding math.

  1. Work on math material first.
  2. Keep voices down so that everyone can focus on their own material.
  3. If a student wants or needs a snack please make sure it is nut free.

In the same way we do varied assessments for the standards, there will be varied reassessments based on the topics and standards that are being reassessed during the third trimester.

6th Grade Math

This week we reviewed topics from chapters 4-6 on Monday. On tuesday we discussed problem solving strategies and how to explain answers. I also passed back the contest questions they had completed and answered any questions about how to solve those types of problems. Wednesday we will begin the geometry unit. Students took notes on the terminology and notation for lines, points, and planes. On thursday students talked with each other and explained the geometry terms from the previous lesson in their own words. After this everyone shared one good definition they received from a classmate. After this students were paired up and worked on practice related to chapter 7.1. On Friday I was out sick, but students should have taken notes on the terminology from chapter 7.2. They should have information about classifying angles, adjacent angles, supplementary angles, and complementary angles. Their homework over the weekend will give them some practice with this. If they have any questions about this material please either have them write them down and bring them to class or email me with them, so that I can address them in class on Monday.

8th Grade Math

I noticed a need for additional teaching on graphing linear equations and absolute value equations, so spent Mondays class on that. Since we didn't have class the following day I gave students several equations to graph. On Wednesday I began chapter 7 which is on systems of equations and inequalities. Students learned about solving systems of equations by graphing. Thursday we talked about using substitution to solve systems on linear equations. On Friday I was out sick so they got to practice solving systems of linear equations with graphing and with substitution. Next week we will talk about using elimination to solve systems of linear equations and solving systems of equations from word problems. There will be a quiz on section 7.1-7.4 on Thursday.
