From our Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin
As we near the holiday season, many of us look for extra ways to spread kindness and joy to others. Our district community is fortunate to have several local programs that help our students and families in need, both now and throughout the year. Two of these organizations, the 3:11 Project and Community Cares, are asking for our help as they assist area families, many of whom are SD 308 families, with gifts for the holidays.
There are numerous children and families left needing a sponsor this year, please consider getting together with colleagues, friends, or your family to provide gifts and household items for those needing some extra help this holiday season. Community Cares is also looking for volunteers to assist with sorting and delivering gifts.
Community Cares - Continuing the 38 year tradition of the Oswego Christmas Project known now as the Community Cares Holiday Project. Help bring cheer to local families by signing up to sponsor a family, or consider volunteering your time on December 17th to help with sorting gifts/and or making deliveries.
3:11 Project - Did you know that the 3:11 Project was initially created because the founder wanted to help families during the holidays? This organization provides assistance year-round to area families. Help 3:11 Project in their mission to create holiday joy for local children. Use this link to sponsor a child, the deadline to drop off gifts is December 4th.
I am always so proud of this district community each time opportunities like this arise; when we all give a little it adds up to a lot! If you choose to assist with one of these two organizations, or the countless other ways you can give back to our community, I thank you.
Expanding Student Voice
Interviews were conducted by members of the Superintendent Student Advisory Committee this week to add seven additional students to the group. Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin and Director of DEI Dr. Jadon Waller joined the students in reviewing applications and conducting in-person interviews with students. The goal of the committee is to grow membership in order to provide a vast representation of their student bodies at each high school, creating a conduit between students and district leaders. The committee meets on topics identified as most important by students through surveys.
The group provides the student perspective, brings forth questions, concerns, and feedback to the district's senior leadership team. From this committee, two Board of Education Student Ambassadors provide updates to the Board, and serve as the student perspective in discussion at Board meetings. The formation of this committee and the Student Ambassadors was started last year as part of the strategic initiative to include student voice in decisions that impact their educational journey.
