Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Good Evening Mayfield!

I want to share how impressed I was this past week with our 6th-grade students and their willingness to participate in Metz Middle School sports tryouts this fall. We had a tremendous about of 6th-grade students travel on the busses and participate in the tryouts for Girls Volleyball, Boys Soccer, Cheerleading, Girls Track, and Football. It is an awesome opportunity for our students to participate in extracurricular activities and enhance the well-rounded education in Manassas City Public Schools.

I would also like to remind everyone that next week is a four-day school week. Students and staff have Friday, September 3rd, and Monday, September 6th off to celebrate Labor Day. I know that our students and staff deserve the time to celebrate the hard work that everyone has put in for a successful start to the school year!

Always Learning!

Gifted and Talented Referrals

Manassas City Public Schools are committed to supporting and enhancing educational opportunities for all students. Our school division is looking for input from families on identifying students who show characteristics of being gifted and talented. Our Gifted and Talented Supervisor, Anthony Vargas, is looking for referrals. The best way to build our opportunities for students is to refer them and let our Gifted and Talented teachers review the child's record and work with the child to see if they qualify for the Gifted and Talented Program. If you believe that your child would benefit from going through the Gifted and Talented program, please complete the MCPS FT Referral below.

Common Learning Spaces

Our students returned to Mayfield Intermediate and were welcomed with new collaborative learning furniture. These new learning spaces are located throughout the school. These unique learning spaces provide students and teachers additional areas to explore, engage, and create new learning opportunities. Throughout the first three weeks of the school year, our students have been utilizing the spaces regularly. Teachers have been using the spaces for class meetings, small group instruction, group presentations, and one-on-one student support. The students are treating the furniture with respect so that our Mayfield community will utilize these great learning spaces for many years to come. Please take a moment to look at home teachers and students have been using these great spaces.

Scholastic Reading Measure

During the past week, all students at Mayfield complete the Scholastic Reading Measure (SRM). The SRM is designed as a diagnostic reading assessment that helps teachers better understand their students' reading levels and reading interests. The SRM provides each student with an individualized Lexile Reading Level. Teachers can use the Lexile Reading Level to help students pick out books that they can independently read independently and build their reading abilities. The goal of our literacy program is for students to increase their Lexile level throughout the school year continually. You can ask your child what their Lexile Reading Level is and look at the chart below to see the types of books your child should be checking out at the library.
