Science: Animal Unit
L.5A.1 Classify animals based on their physical characteristics.
L.5A.2 Explain how different bodily structures help different animals survive.
L.5B.3 Analyze and interpret data about how animals survive when their environment changes.
L.5B.4 Explain how animals can change their environment.
We are beginning this week with exploring animal groups. Next week we will move into individual/group projects. Each child will choose an animal they want to study and the standards will be taught through this research/study. At the end of our unit, you will be invited in to see your child present their projects. Each child/group will make a power point in class.
Writing: Informational Writing
We will be working on writing using our research on animals. Students are expected to write an introduction, body, and closing for their research paper. They will be taking notes to help them write this paper and create their power point presentation.
Reading: Reading for Meaning
We are working on reading to take "stop and jot" notes. We will be focusing on Non-Fiction books about animals over the next few weeks. We are also talking about using dictionaries and context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in our reading.
Math:
We started our unit on time on Monday. Students are expected to tell time to 5 minute intervals. Extension groups will be working on time to the minute and elapsed time.

Field Trip
We will be leaving at 7:45 on the dot. It takes well over an hour to get to the ranch and we want to make sure we are there in time for our 10 o'clock wagon ride. It is very important that your child arrives at school before or as close to 7:40 as possible.
What to wear: please send children in athletic wear and athletic shoes, no sandals or flip-flops
Lunch: If your child is bringing a lunch from home, please make sure that it is in a paper-bag (labeled with their name) that can be disposed of at the farm. Please do not send lunches in lunch boxes, because we will have nowhere to store them.
