Triton Times

Eastlake Middle School 2.4.19

Dear Parents/Guardians and Community Members:

What a great week of celebrating our students! We had over 180 seventh graders recognized for having a 4.0 GPA and we had an additional 80 receive certificates for a 3.75 and above. Additionally, we had our Science Fair this week with many students advancing to the next round. There are a couple of items for you to consider (some are repeats):

A. Dangers of Vaping. Unfortunately, several students were caught vaping on our campus and also drinking a concoction called Lean (mixture of cough syrup and flavored drinks). We are going to be discussing the health issues of engaging in this risky behavior, but we ask partners that you also share in this discussion. Below is a link to a video that we will be using to start the conversations.

B. ELPAC Testing. In the next two months, one hundred and thirty-five of our English Learner Triton students will be taking the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California) Test. The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is California’s assessment system that is used to determine the English language proficiency of students whose primary language is not English. The ELPAC is aligned with the 2012 California English Language Development Standards and assesses four domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The Summative ELPAC is given only to students who have previously been identified as an English learner based upon Initial ELPAC results. The Summative ELPAC measures how well they are progressing with English development in each of the four domains.

To learn more about this test, please attend ELM’s ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) Meeting on Tuesday, February 12th at 9:30 am in the library, right after Coffee with Cooke.

C. Counseling Week. If you have the opportunity, please thank our counselors for the wonderful job they do with our students.

D. Military Grant. We are starting the process of putting together an amazing program for our military families. If you are interested in more information about the TRIDENT Program, please contact Dr. Cooke or attend a future Coffee with the Principal (next one is February 12).

E. Library and Tutoring. We are going to continue keeping our library open Monday through Thursday from 3:20 to 4:20. Tutoring will be provided on Wednesday and Thursday by our ELH tutoring program.

F. Lots Going On! Please see the calendar below for all of the great activities happening at our school site.

G. Recognition. If you have a moment, please recognize our awesome teachers with the link below.

H. Student Concern? If you feel that your student might be a victim of bullying or your student knows of another student being bullied, please use this LINK to report your concerns and we will follow up.

I. Student Recognition. The 8th Grade Academic Awards Ceremony is on Friday, February 8 at 8:30am in the pavilion. There are 220 students being recognized for having a 4.0 Scholarship GPA during first semester of this year as well second semester of last year. Parents are invited to attend, which will affect the traffic in the morning. Please plan accordingly. Students should be back at class by third period.

J. 8th Grade Panoramic Picture. Make sure your student is ready for their big picture moment this Thursday.

We are lucky to have amazing parents and guardians at ELM. Keep shining and let us know what we can do to support your student.

How Can We Serve You Better?

Do you have concerns that you would like to share with the administration team? Please let us know.

Triton Trait of the Month (Enthusiasm)

Yeah!

Enthusiasm is putting your whole heart into what you do. Whatever the task, no matter how big or small, it will always turn out better if you put your whole heart into it! A great thing about enthusiasm is that it's contagious! Your spark of energy and excitement can ignite others to live their lives with enthusiasm.

Its also important to remember that enthusiasm is be more than just showing energy and excitement. It is also represented by a passion for a cause or project. One does not have to be the life of the party to build enthusiasm. By treating even the smallest, insignificant jobs as important, paying attention to details even when the newness wears off, and aiming to be an encourager to others, we build relationships and share enthusiasm with everyone around us.

In the weeks to come, be sure to nominate students for Triton of the Week who exemplify these traits of Enthusiasm.
