Curriculum News
I would like to update you on what we have been working on during our curriculum days each month. Last year we started to input the curriculum into a web-based program called “Build Your Own Curriculum”. We have been finding power standards for each subject area, linking other standards that are also covered in each class, making learning targets for each topic, creating course descriptions, and creating the units along with the number of days the unit will take to cover. We have also been placing topics that will be covered in the units, making lists of academic vocabulary that will be used in the units so the students will have a clear definition of these key words, linking formative assessments to check for understanding (quizzes, test, projects), and activities that the teachers use to teach each unit. The main focus for the elementary was to get the math curriculum entered. The middle and high schools were focused on their individual subject area. Moving forward this year we would like to get math and science finished up and then move onto English and Social Studies. When we are finished, we will have the online curriculum linked to our school’s web page so you can take a look.
This process will take some time to complete, but will be something that we can be proud of when it is published.
If you are curious about what this looks like, please feel free to stop by and see me. I would be happy to give you a sneak peek at what we’ve been working on before it is published.

4YK-5 Principal
Parent Resources
This month we are focusing on math resources. If you are unable to access the internet or are in need of different resources please feel free to contact your child’s teacher. We will make every effort to supply you with the materials and knowledge needed for our child to succeed.
Some GREAT websites for mathematics:
Khan Academy: (K-12) Use this site to learn new concepts or review. It is a free website that allows students to create their own account and monitor progress. Start with a quiz to identify strengths, weaknesses, and monitor growth.
Cool Math Games: (K-8) This site has an array of games that range from basic math skills to problem solving. My eighth graders played a game called cargo bridge as a prerequisite for building a balsa wood bridge during an enrichment class. It helped them develop their skills prior to designing and building their real bridge.

Flashcards/FactMonster: (Elementary) If you choose to be more of a traditionalist this site is the electronic equivalent of old fashioned flash cards. It features flashcards for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and addition & subtraction.

Student Spotlight
This month I wanted to recognize our Foreign Exchange Student, Sasima Kallapapong. She is coming to us from Thailand and is hosted by the Giwojna Family. Sasima’s interests include sports, playing musical instruments, drawing, robots and watching cartoons and movies. Sasima has studied English for 12 years and her favorite classes are music, physical education and English. Her family owns a business in Thailand and she has one brother.
Sasima says, “I wanted to become an exchange student because I want to get more experience, increase my confidence, and learn the culture of America.” Her future plans are to become a musician because she loves music!
Welcome to Flambeau, Sasima! I hope that you will enjoy your time with us. We are certainly excited to have you join us as a Flambeau Falcon!

We are so happy to see all the smiling faces in the lunch line again! Welcome to school year 2017-2018. We have a few new ideas for lunch menu items this year. Hopefully the students like them. Stay tuned to the lunch menu to see what’s new.
With fall looming and football season on the run, I figured I would share a great recipe from the Flambeau Family Favorites cookbook that was made for a fundraiser a few years’ back. This recipe is from our district's Bookkeeper, Lori Applebee. This would be a great recipe to snack on during a football game or any fall get-together. I hope you all enjoy it.
Addictive Crunch
1 box (12 oz.) Crispix
2 lbs. brown sugar
1 box (12 oz.) Rice Chex
1 lb. butter
1 box (12 oz.) Corn Chex
1 c. corn syrup
1 lb. pecans
1 Tbs. vanilla
Mix cereal and pecans together into two 14 x 17 inch cookie sheets or pans. Place butter, corn syrup, and brown sugar in a saucepan. Boil for 5 minutes. Take off stove and add vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal. Bake for 1 hour at 200° F.
If you haven’t already applied for free or reduced lunch, now is a great time to do so. Please remember that you can apply for free or reduced lunch at any time during the school year. If there is a change in your income you can re-apply. However, you do not have to re-apply if your wages/income increases. Lastly, if you were on free or reduced lunch last year you must re-apply to continue on the program this school year. This must be done by October 17th, 2017 or there will be a lapse in your free or reduced status.
Have a great school year!
