VRA Media Center News - April 2020

School Library Month

Get connected to the exciting literacy programs in our media center even when you are at home. Below you will find highlights of our upcoming events, special books, super readers, birthday book club members and much more. The Valley Ridge Media Center can help you with all your learning needs. Use this newsletter to guide you to all we have to offer our Hawk School Family.

Vote for Your Favorite SSYRA Book

Have you been reading the SSYRA and SSYRA Jr. books? The deadline for reading 3 SSYRA books in order to vote was March 27th but we have extended it to April 10. Please go to your grade level Schoology page starting April 6 and vote.

Students in grades 2-8 can now take SSYRA Book Taco Tests at home. You can still earn Brag Tags and we will mail them to you. Once you have read an SSYRA book and passed the Book Taco test, go to your grade level Schoology page and enter a photo or screenshot of your score under Discussions.

The deadline for reading all the books for the reward program is May 1st. There is a great selection of SSYRA books available online with MackinVia. We may not get an Ice Cream party this school year, but we will have another kind of reward coming your way, so stay tuned.

Media Center Schoology Groups K-8

Now that we are all working online, the media center has created 6 virtual classrooms in Schoology. They are called Groups, not Courses, because everything we do is for fun and not tied to grades. Most students are already enrolled in their grade level groups, but if you find that you are not, below are the names and links to the Media Center Groups. Click on the link and request to become a member. We will be host "Find a Book Friday" in these groups and a Middle School Book Club. This is also where students can vote for their favorite SSYRA books.

Happy Birthday to our Book Club Hawks!

Birthday Book Club

The Valley Ridge Academy Media Center’s Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to commemorate your child’s birthday. Your participation not only enriches the library collection but allows you and your child to be personally involved in its growth. To take part in the Birthday Book Club donate one new undamaged hardcover book (not a board book). This book should be a book that your child enjoys and one that we don’t have in the media center already. You can choose a new book at the book store or a new book from the Book Fair. A quick check of our library catalog (Destiny) will tell you if we already have the book. If you would prefer, you may make a monetary donation of $15 and your child can choose from recently acquired books that are waiting to be put on the shelves.

The following is included with your enrollment;

- A special book plate placed inside the front cover of the donated book with your child’s name and birthday.

- A photo will be taken of your child with the book he/she chooses and will be displayed in the media center and online in the Valley Ridge Reader. This photo will be sent home with your child at the end of the year to keep and enjoy.

- Your child will be the first to read and/or check-out the book that he/she
