Samuel Clemens Joins Project LIT Community
Samuel Clemens is proud to announce it is now a Project LIT Community member.
Ms. Merriner, Project LIT Community sponsor at Clemens, held an informational meeting on January 24th in the library. Those in attendance were briefed on the history of Project LIT Community and afforded the opportunity to peruse this year’s book choices for reading. The first book selected for Clemens Project LIT is Children of Blood and Bone.
Access to a diverse book list of both authors and characters—as well as those addressing relevant issues—is critical to our high school audience. These books are also fairly new to publication, making their timing of addressed relevant, as well. Additionally, many of the selections have been nominated for or winning various awards.
All participants in Project LIT Community are asked to purchase their own copies of the selected book, either as an actual book or a Kindle/electronic book accessible via mobile device. If a student participant faces challenges with purchasing their own copy, assistance in the form of donations by community and faculty members is available.
At present, Project LIT Community has only a few meetings planned. The next will likely be in early February to discuss the selected book and to determine which (if any) students need assistance in procuring the book. Project LIT Community will next convene after everyone has finished reading the book (most likely late-March) to enjoy food, trivia, and to talk about the book. While many English teachers will be taking part in Project LIT Community, the discussion is not (just) centered on the literary merits of the book. Rather, most anything related to the book—and how it relates to you and/or the community or the world, including just how you felt reading it—is open for discussion and does not count for a grade.
Started at Maplewood High School in Nashville, Project LIT Community exists to “increase book access and spread a love of reading” to not only high school students but also those within the communities of high school students. Project LIT now has over 500 communities in schools around the nation, and we couldn’t be more proud to be counted among them. The Clemens Community is open to both students of Clemens and their parents/guardians, as well as to faculty members. To learn more, please follow Project LIT Community on Twitter at @LitClemens. In-person, students may swing by D205; anyone can email Ms. Merriner at cmerriner@scuc.txed.net.

Banner Month for AFJROTC
Shortly after the Change of Command ceremony, in which Cadet Lt. Colonel Ryan Pineda assumed the role of corps commander, senior Cadet Kyle Turner was awarded a Flight Scholarship from the United States Air Force. He is one of only 150 Air Force-funded scholarship recipients nationwide selected for this award. Turner will attend a summer university to earn a private pilot license/certification.
The presentation of this award was performed by USAF Brigadier General Christopher Niemi, the Commander at Maxwell Air Force Base. General Niemi spoke with first- and fourth-year cadets about his experiences of being a fighter pilot and a leader in our Air Force. It was an honor for him to visit our campus and JROTC program.

Clemens' Teachers win BIG Grant Money
Congratulations to Joseph Menchey of Samuel Clemens High School, who was a part of three winning grants from the SCUC ISD Education Foundation today. Menchey was a co-applicant with Ronald Kirchoff and Nicole Rosas-Saunders for the "Mussel/Coral Propagation Lab" that received $2,150 from the Prize Patrol.
Menchey also co-authored the "Strategy Board Game Club", that will bring another $900 from the Education Foundation.
Finally, his application for "GeekCON" was also accepted, which will net another $1,800. Menchey and Corbett Junior High librarian Marco Ricondo co-authored the application, which will allow for a yearly community event that will bring in students, parents, employees and stakeholders in the district.

We hold 5 blood drives a year here at the school and are already at close to 400 units drawn in this school year, with 2 blood drives left.
The blood drives are open to the community. Contact Mr. Pelly at Clemens HS for more information.
