“What Would Dr. King Say Today: Chaos or Community?”
An exciting way to meet needs of gifted students is to encourage their participation in extracurricular activities that involve academic skills.
The City of Columbus Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Oratorical Contest will be held January 16, 2016. The attached registration forms are due Friday, December 11, 2015. Young poets and speech writers from all over the city of Columbus will come together and share in one common goal: to talk about the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The competition requires students to compose and deliver a speech no longer than 4 minutes under a common theme. This year's theme is, “What Would Dr. King Say Today: Chaos or Community?”

2016 MLK Breakfast Speaker: A Contest for CCS Students in Grades 6-12
CCS will select one student speaker to represent us at the 2016 Martin Luther King Breakfast, held on January 18, 2016 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The student chosen will get into the breakfast free and receive two complimentary tickets for his/her parents or guardians. The competition to become that speaker is open to all students in grades 6-12. Dr. Good, CCS Superintendent, will introduce our student speaker at the event.
Theme of Speech: “Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.
Length of Speech: 3 minutes maximum
Deadline for Entry: Monday, December 7, 2015
How to Enter: Send a recording of your students reciting their speeches to the ELA 6-12 Curriculum Office by any of these methods: deliver or send in school mail to Room 209A @ Sherwood MS (att. Carla Mae Phillips), email as attachment to cphillips3865@columbus.k12.oh.us, or video message to 740-228-1509. Put “MLK Breakfast”in the subject line. Include the student's name, school, grade, contact information, and the teacher’s email & phone number. Download this FLYER with all of the details to hand out to students and post in buildings.
