Manipulative Focus
Why use manipulatives?
- Manipulatives provide a way for students to manipulate objects in order to form a concrete understanding of mathematical concepts.
- The TEKS specify using manipulatives in grades K-5.
- They make learning fun and engaging for students and reduce the amount of worksheets in classrooms.
MANIPULATIVE OF THE WEEK: BASE 10 BLOCKS
Base 10 blocks are a math manipulative used by students to learn basic mathematical concepts including addition, subtraction, number sense, place value, and counting. The students can manipulate the blocks in different ways to express numbers and patterns.
The Base 10 blocks provide a spatial model of the base 10 number system. The smallest blocks- cubes that measure 1 cm by 1cm are called units. The long, narrow blocks that measure 10cm by 1 cm are called rods. The flat, square blocks that measure 10cm by 10cm are called flats.
