Hendricks High School Happenings
August 21-Sept 1
Welcome back!
Social Studies
Here is the bi-weekly update from the Hendricks social studies department. In World and American History, the high school students are reviewing the key skills they will need to develop to study and critically analyze history, as well as the five themes of history. In United States History, students are learning about the foundations of the United States government, and have so far read and analyzed the Declaration of Independence and the failure that was, the Articles of Confederation. In MN Studies, students reviewed the concept of primary and secondary sources and then presented a time capsule composed of primary sources about themselves. Lastly, in American studies, the fifth graders are reviewing geography concepts, created their own imaginary land map, and created posters based on the different regions of the United States.

Science
My goal in science this year, and every year, is to have the students doing the work that scientists actually do. The fifth graders are doing nature studies, the sixth graders are designing procedures for testing scientific questions, the 7th/8th grade life science class is learning how living things are classified, the 9th/10th grade biology class is modeling and testing water movement into and out of cells, and 11/12th graders are examining the water quality of Lake Hendricks. Check back soon for pictures and results!

In English, the high school students have been getting acquainted with the Toulmin Model. This is a model which helps students dissect arguments into the larger and smaller parts. They will be using this model to help organize their future essays.
Grades 7/8 are currently review the parts of speech. They are focusing on how these are used to make language clearer and more descriptive.
