LSES Weekly Update

Exceptional things happen here!

Week of May 30 - June 3

A peek in to kindergarten...

Kindergarten has been working hard in class learning to read, write, and participate in discussion anchored in literature. We are building our writing skills with daily writing. In math our focus has been on composing and decomposing numbers in base ten (tens and units.)

We have been also discussing transportation and service vehicles in class. We were lucky enough to have Officer Rios stop by to share her police car with us, we will have a visit from the fire station to look in detail at a fire truck! In science force and motion have been a focus and kindergartners have been working together to build and test ramps at school.

Art Night

On May 19, our school was transformed into a gallery of student art work at our 2nd annual Art Night. The evening was filled with student art, live music and food. Family and friends arrived and were treated to a concert from Una Voz (the HSD Mariachi band) while they ate a spaghetti dinner provided by the PTO. The band played mariachi classics like De Colores, Viva Mexico, and La Bamba. Karie Oakes, this years' Right Brain Initiave artist, was introduced and then guests set off to explore all of the student art. Ms. Oakes taught our students how to work with clay and helped guide the students with their projects. She also trained some of our teachers on how to use the Lincoln Street kiln. The art displayed showcased the talent of our students and we couldn't be more proud. As they were leaving, families and friends were invited to the cafeteria to pick out and take home some clothing donated by the LDS church. Thank you to all of our artists, Karie Oakes, and everyone in attendance for making this evening extra special.

Jog-a-thon

Big image

Each year our PTO organizes a Jog-A-Thon fundraiser. The second largest fundraiser of the year, the Jog-A-Thon is a special Lynx community event that gets the students directly involved in making a difference for their school. Students participated in this event during their P.E. class last week. Teachers, staff, parents and community members joined students while running/walking their laps and encouraged each child to do their very best. The students collected pledges and flat donations prior to the event from friends, relatives and neighbors. Monies from this event will help fund field trips for next school year. Students have until June 2nd to collect all of their pledge money. Prizes will be given to every student that turns in $20 or more. Every student that turns in $250 or more will receive a Kindle Fire! A big thank-you to everyone that helped count laps, pledged money, and participated in this event. We are grateful to have the support of our Lynx families!
