What's Up At The Nest...

Principal's Message

OMS Families,

We can't believe how fast time has flown. This week wraps up a fantastic year at the nest. The last official day of student attendance will be Friday, May 29th. Our teachers have been working hard to plan fun activities to help our students (and us) find closure to the year. Next week we will have an "At-Home" Field Day, celebrate our 5th graders with a reverse parade recognition, and have one last ALL-SCHOOL ZOOM to dance into the summer.

We have also scheduled an all-school reverse parade for June 4th. Please see additional details below.

There are still more videos to come! We will publish another one later this week!

June 4th All School Reverse Parade

On Thursday, June 4, 2020, at 10 am we invite you and your children to drive through the main entrance loop to wave goodbye to your teachers and staff. We want everyone to feel comfortable and safe. We also recognize that not all families and staff will be comfortable or able to participate in this event.

For the safety of our staff and your families, we have some very clear guidelines to follow. Please read and adhere to these instructions.

  • We ask that you drive slowly and do not stop the car line to talk. You can say hello out of the car window to staff as you drive through the lot.

  • You may not exit your car.

  • Do not pass items to the teachers, not even notes.

  • Staff will be following social distance guidelines both with each other and the cars coming through.

  • Stay in the car line the entire time.

  • This is truly to see everyone, because we miss you!

  • Please do not arrive before 10 am so staff members have a chance to set up safely.

  • All cars will enter and exit through the main entrance (just like pick up and drop off).

  • We are asking for families to stagger their arrival times to help lessen any backups along the residential roads leading up to OMS.

  • A-F → 10:00 - 10:15

  • G-L→ 10:15 - 10:30

  • M-S → 10:30 - 10:45

  • T-Z → 10:45 - 11:00

  • We will be on site until 11:30 am or until all cars have exited the lot.

  • When you exit the parking lot, please turn right to maintain good traffic flow.

Teachers will be stationed along the sidewalk of the main drive, socially distanced from each other and your vehicles. We ask for your patience as cars are moving through the drive, and follow the above timeline to the best of your ability. Again, please make sure that everyone stays in the vehicle. We are really looking forward to seeing so many of you in person!

Register, Register, Register for 20-21

We need your help in our planning for next year! On Monday, May 4, parents received an email from the district with student-specific online registration instructions for all students returning or pre-registered for the 2020-21 school year. If you have not already done so, please complete your child's registration ASAP. Completed registrations help us figure out our staffing and classroom sections for next year. In addition, bus transportation fees increase by $25 for students registered after 5/31.

If you or someone you know needs to pre-register a NEW student, please use the links below. Once we have received the online pre-registration, our office staff will contact you regarding next steps.

Kindergarten Pre-registration

1st-5th Pre-registration

If you have a child in Kindergarten or 1st-4th grade who will NOT be attending OMS next year, please email your current teacher and Mrs. Kappelman and Mrs. Tucker so that we may plan accordingly. (,

Student Material Pick-Up and Drop Off

We are making arrangements for the return of your child’s materials. Chromebooks, iPADS, chargers, textbooks, LMC books, and any other classroom items will also be collected at this time.

Collection and return of student materials will take place on June 1st and June 2nd at OMS in ABC order by student last name. Please click on the link below for additional details including your assigned day and time and how to prepare items to return to the school.

Technology Return

Place all borrowed technology in the bag it was delivered in. Refer to the sheet that came with the device to make sure you include all charging bricks, cables, and power cords.

Please do not attempt to clean the devices.

Make sure the bag is labeled with your family's name.

Put the bag in your trunk along with your LMC and classroom return bags.

ABC Countdown! May 29th - OLIVE US WILL ZOOM

On May 29th, our ABC countdown activity is to ZOOM with your teachers. With May 29th also being the last day of school for students we are going to try an ALL SCHOOL ZUMBA ZOOM!

A Zoom link will be sent early next week!

Friday, May 29th at 3:30 - 3:35 pm - All School Zumba Zoom

After our Zoom at 3:35 we would love for all Olive Owls to go outside for one last Hoot, Hoot, Hooray. At the completion of our Zumba Zoom I will ask all students to log off and head outside to their front porch, backyard, or open a window to shout Hoot, Hoot, Hooray! Our hope is that we will be able to hear each other give a Hoot throughout the community!

Please click here for our schedule of events for our ABC Countdown to the last day of the school year. If you would like to share your school spirit or see other student's countdown activities, click this link to access our ABC Countdown page on Flipgrid! Password OliveOwls2020

Lunch Account Balances

Lunch Account Balances

This is a reminder that if there is a balance left over in your student’s lunch account, that balance will be carried over for your student to use during the 2020-2021 school year. However, due to the extenuating circumstances caused by COVID-19, you have an option to request that the balance be returned to you via check at the end of this school year. Our Department of Food services will only honor this request if the leftover balance is greater than $10. If you would like that balance returned to you, please call the Department of Food Services at (847) 758-4883.

Summer Keyboard Challenge!

It’s time for the 6th annual District Keyboard Challenge! Go to this summer and earn minutes for our school. If each of us practiced for just 30 minutes a week, we will capture the Golden Keyboard from Patton. Plus the top typer at our school will be recognized at a District Meeting. An email with each student’s username and password for the Typing Training site will be sent to parents the week of June 1st. All you have to do is go to starting June 8th and practice until August 7th.
