A message from the Principal-Mrs. Bookman
To our Suffield Family,
The second week of school is now under our belt! Thank you all for helping to make it successful. To continue along the way, we'll need your support in being sure the keep your child home from school if he/she is not feeling well.
To help reduce the spread of COVID, testing your child before returning to school will be helpful. If your child is ill and you'd like to perform a home test to make sure he/she does not have COVID, you can request one from the school. They are FREE! Please just talk to Mrs. Hurd or Mrs. Hahn when you call in and they will arrange to get one for your use.
Tonight from 4:00-7:00 is the Falcon Fest. It will be held at Field High School in the practice field. There will be many games, bounce houses, and fun for the family! The cost is $5/person or $15/family. Food trucks will be on hand for a quick dinner before the Field vs. Ravenna football game. I hope to see you there!
Finally, if your child is a new Open Enrolled Kindergarten student and you did not have a Kindergarten sign from the school posted in your yard, we can arrange for one to be given to you at the car rider pick-up time. Please let us know if you need one! Email Mrs. Hurd at kelly.hurd@fieldlocalschools.org

Birthday Treats
At this time, we will allow Birthday Treats to be brought to school. We are required to inform you of the Healthy Eating Guidelines (see below) and suggest that you use this when selecting a treat. Whatever you choose, please note that all treats brought to school for the purpose of sharing with others, need to be prepackaged so we are able to know and see the ingredients list. There are many students who have a variety of food allergies and having the ingredients listed helps the school nurse determine if a student with allergies can eat a particular treat.
Ohio's Parent Mentor Program
We would like to introduce you to Christina Hemberger, the Parent Mentor for Field and Southeast Local Schools. She is available to our families as a resource and advocate for those students with disabilities. Below is the Parent Mentor brochure. Feel free to reach out to her if you have any questions are interested in learning more about her services. Cell (330)-298-8130

Regional Bird Disease Update
The ODNR will re-evaluate its feeding recommendations at the end of September, but in the meantime, please continue to report cases of sick/dead birds to the ODNR website. There seem to be many cases of conjunctivitis with house finches being reported. In these cases, the public is encouraged to take their feeders down for 7-10 days if they have not already done so. Bleach and clean the feeders before putting them up again. These reports are likely unrelated to the major outbreak but instead other infectious bacteria such as Mycoplasma gallisepticum or Salmonellosis. Report sick and dead birds to this website: https://ohiodnr.gov/wps/portal/gov/odnr/discover-and-learn/safety-conservation/about-ODNR/wildlife/report-diseased-birds
In case you missed it...
Do you know what DAY it is?
We continue to use a block schedule where specials will rotate every four days. This means there is no specific day for music, art, computer lab, or P.E. Each class will have an assigned time and will participate in these specials in a rotating sequence. One huge benefit will be that no special will regularly be missed because of school holidays. Your child’s teacher will let you know your child’s exact schedule. Be sure to check the breakfast menu to see what “day” we are on!

Counselor's Corner- A Note From Miss Livers
Creating Routines
We are off to a great start this school year at Suffield Elementary! Students have done such a nice job transitioning back to school and remaining flexible to change. Thank you parents for all you have done to ensure your child has a successful school year. As we continue into the school year please remember having a routine and predictability is important for children. Creating routines at home can provide children with comfort by letting them know what to expect and what is expected of them. Home routines also help promote continued success for your child at school. Each home and family schedule is unique, below are some tips to consider when thinking about a morning and evening routine that best fits your family’s needs.
Morning routines:
- Have a set time for waking up each morning
- Have a set time for leaving the house each morning so your child knows when to be ready
- Have your child start the day on a positive note, ask them what they are looking forward to today or things they are grateful for in their day.
- Incorporating schedule cards/charts to guide your child as they get ready for the day
Evening routines:
- Check-in with your child about their day. Ask for rainbows (a positive from the day) and clouds (a difficulty in the day) to learn more about your child's school day.
- Have bookbags/lunches packed and ready in the evening
- Have a designated spot at home for your child’s backpack/school supplies.
- Have a set space for your child to complete school assignments
- Have clothes picked out the night before school
- Have a consistent bedtime to allow your child to have adequate rest and a regular sleep schedule.
- Incorporating schedule cards/charts to guide your child as they get ready for bedtime
Allowing your child to participate in the routine activities of getting ready and prepared for the next day helps promote responsibility and initiative. Life can be very busy and we can be faced with the unexpected! If you fall off your schedule, don’t worry, reset, try again, and make adjustments if needed! If you would like more information on creating routines or using schedule cards/charts at home, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

School Counseling Needs Assessment for 2021-2022 School Year
Your input helps us better serve students and make sure we meet their needs as we transition to the school year 2020-21. We look forward to supporting your child's academic, career, and social/emotional growth. Counselors will address each of those growth areas in the classroom and school-wide activities. In addition, individual and small group counseling will address these areas more specific to the individual needs of students. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey to best prepare our department to serve you and your students. This is an anonymous survey that should only take about 3-5 minutes to complete.

Suffield Elementary will now take part in recycling markers that no longer work. It’s a super easy project to help our environment! You can send in any brand of markers, sharpies, dry erase, and highlighters. Once we collect the markers, they will be shipped to a facility that repurposes them so that they are kept out of the landfills.
