Talk Read Talk Write
Next Steps and Planning
Conceptual Objective: Teachers will deepen their understanding of how to support content area teachers, ensuring their success in using the TRTW strategy.
Procedural Objective: Teachers will write an exemplar lesson using the TRTW strategy.
Session Agenda
Model the TRTW Method, using QSSSA:
1. TALK
- (Question) Turn and talk to a shoulder partner: How is TRTW different from a traditional lesson structure?
- (Signal) You have one minute. Give a thumbs up when your group is ready.
- (Stem) Use the following sentence stem in your conversation: "TRTW is different from a traditional lesson structure because..."
- (Share) Share with your table.
- (Assess) I will call on students randomly to share with the whole class.
- Everyone will read an excerpt from TRTW (p. 15-17)
- You have 15 minutes to read. As you read, you will use the strategy: Highlight PLUS: You should highlight at least 3-5 sentences/phrases. After reading, you will be asked to discuss the sections you highlighted.
- If you finish early, go back to your highlights and make notes in the margins to prepare for group talk time.
- (Question) Turn and talk to a shoulder partner about what you highlighted.
- (Signal) When you are done, stand up with your annotations/highlights and find a partner.
- (Stem) When you talk, use the stem: "The most important phrase/sentence from this reading was... because..."
- (Share) Share with your partner. You have 1 minute and will be asked to find one more person to share with before you sit down.
- (Assess) Students with black shirts will be asked to share with the whole class.
- Open a new Google Doc or Word Document on your computer.
- You have a choice of what you will write. Both of the options below will be to the real audience of your home campus. Think of how you will present to other content areas/departments and what you will need to say/do to make sure they will be successful trying this strategy in their classrooms.
- Write an explanation of the overview of TRTW, including the planning components of the TRTW method.
- Write a persuasive claim that TRTW is a good strategy that should be used in all content areas.
Time to Explore TRTW
1. TALK
- (Question) Turn and talk to a shoulder partner: How are you going to present this information to other content areas? What will they need from you to be successful?
- (Signal) You have one minute. We will use "Thinker's Chin" - put your hand on your chin and take it off when you are ready.
- (Stem) Use the following sentence stem in your conversation: "In order for other content area teachers to be successful using this strategy, I will need to..."
- (Share) Share with your table.
- (Assess) The person with the longest name from your table should answer.
- You are invited to the TRTW BLEND course - click here. You will be reading/reviewing the Talk, Read, and Write buttons in more depth. As you read, we will use the "PAT List" strategy to decide which strategy you want to try first.
"As you read, PAY ATTENTION TO..."
A. Talk: Strategy Slides (Slide 4) on third page of the Talk Section
B. Talk: Strategy Slides (Slide 9) on third page of the Talk Section
C. Effective Questioning Strategies (Slides 6-9) - button at bottom of Resource Page
- You will have 15 minutes. If you finish early, review an exemplar lesson from another content.
3. TALK
- (Question) Turn and talk to a shoulder partner about the three items on the PAT list: what talk #1 strategy you will use first, what talk #2 strategy you will use first, and the important take aways from the "Effective Questioning" slides.
- (Signal) When you are done, grab a post-it to write an open-ended question (which will be added to one of the content area posters around the room).
- (Stem) When you discuss the TALK slides, use the stem: "The reason I selected the strategy "____" is because..."
- (Share) Add your questions to the posters, based on the content area you chose.
- (Assess) I will call on participants randomly, after choosing a few questions from each poster.
- You will create a lesson plan for an upcoming content objective using the TRTW method.
