Math
Language Arts
In the area of Language Arts, we have been continuing to build our reading stamina and strengthen our predicting, inferring, and overall reading comprehension skills. Each day, students participate in a silent (independent) reading period, individualized IXL Language Arts activity, and participate in a small- group reading lesson.
In the area of writing, we are working to wrap up the final drafts of our personal narrative stories. I have really enjoyed reading many of the students writing pieces and learning all about their favorite memories/ life moments. I am looking forward to collecting and reviewing all of the students' published, final drafts within the next few days! :)
Science
Our first Science unit of the school year has focused on the study of rocks. So far, we have been learning about patterns of Earth's features and how volcanoes form (in addition to why some explode, while others lay dormant). Other interesting topics within our unit include weathering and erosion, natural hazards, and the creation of fossils. Recently, students were given the opportunity to complete a hands-on experiment with sugar cubes that allowed them to get up close and personal with erosion- in- action! In another activity, they began drafting their own unique plans that would help to protect their imaginary homes from potential landslides in the town of "Slide City."
