LET'S TALK
Last March, the school district softly rolled out a new communication tool called Let's Talk. Let’s Talk makes it easy for parents, students, staff, and community members to ask questions, request information, and share feedback. Over the summer, we added topics for each of our schools. See this blog post to learn more and view a short video that explains how easy it is to use Let's Talk. Please click HERE to use Let's Talk.
CVSD BUDGET DEVELOPMENT
CVSD invites all community members to learn about and join in on the budget development process by attending upcoming School Board meetings. All members of the CVSD community are always welcome to attend Board meetings. See the topics and schedule in the image above and on the Budget page of the district's website. https://www.cvsdvt.org/budget
Links to join the virtual meetings will be available on that page and on the website calendar. We will also post the presentations on the Budget page afterward for those that cannot attend.
CHESS CLUB (Session #2) SIGN UP
For the first time ever Hinesburg Community School has a Chess Club! The first session has been a tremendous success and session 1 is finishing up November 7th. The new session will begin December 5th. If your child is currently in Chess Club and wishes to continue, you will need to fill out the sign up form again. Due to an overwhelming interest, we are limiting the club size to 40 participants this time around. Once we have 40 students signed up, we will close the sign up link.
We meet on Mondays from 3-4:00 in the middle school. Chess Club players can be picked up at 4:00 or take the late bus home. The link to sign up is here.
SCHOOL HOUSE SAVINGS IS BACK!
For those who don’t know, School House Savings is a school-based savings program sponsored by National Bank of Middlebury and run by volunteers. Students can “bank” at school on Banking Days every Monday from 7:30 to 8:00am at a table outside the cafeteria. We accept all deposits from as small as a penny!
Enrolling is easy! Just pick up a form on Banking Day to complete and sign and return to the school, or enroll online. The bank deposits the first dollar into your child’s savings account. Once enrolled, students can add to their savings account each banking day. Everyone who deposits during the month is entered into a drawing for $5 as an incentive to save. It’s never too early to save for the future!

GREAT AMERICAN SMOKE OUT
Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US. The Great American Smokeout (GASO) is a national event, which occurs this year on November 17th, that challenges all smokers to quit smoking for 24 hours. While cigarette smoking rates have dropped (from 42% in 1965 to 15.1% in 2015), vape, cigar, pipe, and hookah are very much on the rise. Smoking kills people – there’s no “safe” way to smoke tobacco.
If past Smokeouts are any indication, as many as one-third of the nation's more than 45 million smokers could be taking the day off from smoking! Join others across the nation and use this day to plan to quit, or to plan and quit smoking that day. By quitting — even for one day — smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.
Check out 802Quits.org for tips, resources, and support available free to all Vermonters everyday!
Please consider modeling healthy behaviors for the young people in your life. If you decide to participate in the Great American Smokeout, share with them the reasons that you are quitting. They look up to you so much and can learn a lot from you about why you have decided to quit. If you aren’t someone who smokes or vapes, share that story as well. What a great opportunity to connect with your child!
The 802Quits Vermont Quit Partners also offer:
Group cessation classes - a forum for peer support, encouragement, and goal setting.
Tools, such as distraction putty (to relieve stress and keep hands and minds busy) and pedometers (to track steps between cigarettes).
Free nicotine replacement therapy - including gum, patches or lozenges
The Tobacco Treatment Specialists working as Quit Partners in our area can be contacted through the UVM Medical Center's Community Health Improvement Office at 802-847-2278 or CHITTS@vtmednet.org. People can find a Quit Partner near them and learn about other ways to quit at 802quits.org.
