In the event that we would need to close the school early this winter due to inclement weather, it is important that we have a list of emergency contacts in our system. This will allow your emergency contact to transport or walk your child home if you were not able to get to school in time. Some people make arrangements for family friends and neighbors to be emergency contacts.

When teachers collaborate, students benefit! Teachers across the district are working together to improve instruction and student outcomes. Teachers and paraprofessionals meet every Wednesday afternoon to collaborate around student success. Sometimes we meet in large groups and sometimes we collaborate in smaller groups. Below are pictures of our grade level teams collaborating around math workshop, writing workshop, reading workshop, reading assessment, and social studies content. This time is valuable for both educators and students.

The District recognizes that under proper conditions animals can be properly controlled. At the same time the presence of animals has resulted in increasing numbers of complaints associated with noise, harassment and hygiene. Therefore, dogs, horses and other encaged animals will no longer be allowed on district grounds except under the following conditions:

*Dogs must be kept off all play areas and arrival and dismissal areas.

*All dogs must be kept on a leash with a maximum length of eight feet and must be kept under the owners control at all times.

From our School:

If you decide to bring your dog on school grounds after hours or on the weekend, please pick up after them. Our custodian is often called out to pick up messes and we do not want our friends to step in anything. Thanks for your help!

Congratulations to Skylar Gans and Chino Bolds for being selected to be a science ambassadors! Here is a bit about the OHSU program.

Science Ambassadors
The Oregon National Primate Research Center is home to the Science Ambassadors, a group of 20 high school students recruited from Portland metro-area high schools to act as mentors for 16 fifth graders (“mentees”) each year.

The Science Ambassadors program is designed to expose both the high school mentors and the fifth grade students to science through hands-on activities. Through this program we hope to inspire students to continue to study science throughout high school and perhaps choose to pursue careers in science. High school Science Ambassador Mentors gain valuable organizational and social skills, in addition to learning about cutting-edge biomedical science on the campus of a world-class research facility.

High school mentors are expected to attend weekly meetings (held on Wednesdays, from 4-6 p.m.). All meetings are held at the Primate Center. Each month, mentors hear from a Center scientist about his/her work. Other meetings are dedicated to planning and implementing both hands-on science activities and social interaction activities for the 5th graders.

In addition to planning monthly activities for the fifth grader “mentees,” high school mentors are expected to maintain an e-mail/telephone/US mail relationship with their assigned student and his/her parents, sending reminders about meetings, and checking in occasionally to be sure that the student is enjoying the program.

Four students are selected by their peers to serve as Student Directors each year. These students assume additional duties, including work outside of the regular meeting times. All Science Ambassador mentors must be responsible and highly motivated. (High school student mentor commitment is for a minimum of one school year.)

Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free - Help protect young lungs and turn off engines while waiting in the car line.

Did you know that Beaverton Schools are Idle-Free Zones? If you are going to be waiting longer than 10 seconds in the car line please turn off your engine while you wait. Idling vehicles contribute to air pollution and emit air toxins. Children whose lungs are still developing are at high risk for developing adverse health effects from these pollutants. This pollution even enters the school through open windows and through the front entrance where kids are waiting. Turning off your engine will also save money, idling for just 10 seconds wastes more gas than restarting the engine!

These sample tests provide an opportunity for Oregon teachers and students to familiarize themselves with the navigation and functionality of the online tests, as well as with the embedded accessibility supports described in the Oregon Accessibility Manual.

Winter break is fast approaching and we are very excited to host Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) Practice Battles on Thursday, Jan. 3 at the Main Library. Here is your OBOB team’s opportunity to test their knowledge against teams from other schools in a situation much like they may face in the regional/state tournaments. Let your teams know they can register today! If students from your school want to participate in the library’s practice battles, but their teammates can’t make it, they can still register as individuals, and we’ll place them with a team the morning of the practice battle.

We have many other great events happening in December, and we hope to see many Scholls Heights families visiting us! Beaverton City Library will be open all of winter break except on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, and we’re closing early (5 p.m.) on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.
