Anti-semitism and Kristallnacht
Anti-semitism
At the start of the 19th century anti-semitism was a huge problem in Europe. This was noticeable in Adolf Hitlers writings and speeches. In Hitlers book Mein Kampf he said that the German Aryan race was superior to all others. Hitler blamed the Jews for the things he didn't like , he blamed them for losing the first world war and he also claimed the Jews were slowly taking over the country. Once Hitler was in power he started a campaign on the 1st of April 1933 to bar Jewish owned shops, this increased the hatred towards the Jews in Germany, this was shown by the decision of German shops and restaurants to not serve the Jewish. Posters begin to show up in Germany saying that the Jews weren't admitted and Jews enter at own risk, Jews were even banned from some public parks, public transport and swimming pools. Many Jewish doctors and lawyers lost business as the Germans were told not to use them, any Jews employed by the Germans were also sacked.
Kristallnacht (Crystal Night)
In 1938 a new program was set up by Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels and Reinhard Heydrich to encourage Jews to move out of the country this was called Kristallnacht (Crystal Night), Kristallnacht took place on the 9th-10th November 1938 as a reaction of the Germans to the news that a German diplomat had been killed in Paris by a Jewish refugee in Paris, but the entire event was actually organized by the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP). During Kristallnacht more then 7,500 Jewish shops were destroyed and 400 synagogues were burnt down, around 91 Jews were killed and approximately 20,000 Jews were sent to concentration camp. Hitlers program had been successful in that after this event had occurred the amount of Jews wanting to leave increased greatly, half of the Jewish population had left the Germany between 1933 and 1939.
