Starfish Science

What Are Starfish?

  • Starfish are marine vertebrates with 5 or more limbs.
  • Starfish live in the ocean.
  • Starfish can regenerate their limbs when broken off. This is called fragmentation because when the limb falls off, it turns into a whole new starfish.

Why Are Starfish Being Studied?

Starfish are being studied because scientists, at the University of Florida, want to know more about a developmental biology, that is now called, "regenerative medicine." The question to ask is, "Why do some organisms regenerate their limbs while others can't?"

What Is The Purpose Of The Research?

Scientists want to get a level of the molecular genetics, and according to the article, "...now the revolution in stem cell biology," could help research the answers to questions about regeneration in starfish.
