Presidency

-President of the United States who rose to power in the Senate during the New Deal.

-JFK's running mate in 1960 and was chosen larglesy to help solidify support for the Democratic ticket in the anti Catholic South.

-He assumed Presidency after John F. Kennedys assination in 1963.

-Was responsible for libral programs such as the Great Society, War on Poverty, and civil rights legislation, as well as the escalation of the Vietnam War.

Great Society/24th Amendment

-President Johnson called his version of the Democratic reform program the Great Society.

-In 1965, Congress passed the many great society measures, including medicare, civil rights legislation, and federal aid to education.

-24th Amendemnt Poll Tax Abolished.

-Congress had the power to enforce this via legislation.

Tonkin Gulf Resolution and Vietnam War

-Incident in 1964 that President Johnson used to justify increased US involvment in Vietnam.

-Claim was that two US ships had been attacked.

-On Augest 2nd and 4th were allegedly fired upon.

-Johnson called the attack "unprovoked" and moved to make political gains out of the movement.

-He ordered a "limited" retalitory air rade against North Vietnamese bases.

-This gave the president authority to take "all neccessary measures to repel any armed attack against forces of the United States".

Civil Rights Acts/Watershed Year

Civil Rights Act of 1964-This act made racial, religious, and sex descrimination by employers illegal and gave the government the power to enforce all laws regarding civil rights, including desegregation of schools and public places.

Voting Rights Act-Banned literacy tests and sent federal voter registers into southern states.

March 31, 1968- President johnson issued an adress to the nation stating that he would freeze American troop levels and gradually shift more responsibility to South Vietnamese.

June 5, 1968- Robert Kennedy was shot and killed by an Arab immigrant resentful of the candidiates pro Israel views.

Election of 1968- Richard Nixon (Republican) is elected president.

Free Speach Movement- Led by Mario Savio it protested on behalf of students rights.

-It spread to colleges throughout the country discussing unpopular faculty tenure decisions, dress codes, dormitory regulations, and apperances by Johnson administration officials.
