Steam Engines
A New Way to Do Work
Steam Engine
We all know James Watt the local engineer. He has figured out a way to help all the coal miners in town. Right now coal miners are using horses to haul platforms of coal to the earth's surface. Our ponies now can do 22,000 ft-lb of work in a minute. Watt determined that since a horse is probably 1.5 times more powerful than a pony he took 22,000 times 1.5 and called it 1 horsepower. In other words, 1 horsepower is 33,000 ft-lb of work. So our horses now can lift a 550 lb load a distance of 1 foot in 1 second.
