5th Grade Weekly Classroom Newsletter - March 20th

Rock Eagle Overnight Field Trip 2nd Payment Due Today!!!

Please submit your second installment check ($75.00 payable to FSA ES) to Mrs. Ozkan today. Please clearly write your child’s name in the memo of the check.


I am still in need of a male chaperone. If you wish to be a chaperone, please e-mail Mrs. Ozkan at kozkan@fsaelementary.org. The cost for each parent chaperone is $150.00.

Fifth Grade Field Trip to Stone Mountain

In connection with our Civil War unit in social studies, fifth grade students will take a field trip to the Stone Mountain, located at 1000 Robert E. Lee Blvd Stone Mountain, GA 30083. We will be leaving FSA ES at 9:00 AM on Friday, April 3rd and will return at approximately 1:45 PM on the same day. We will be traveling by private school bus, and will have 5 teacher chaperones, and 1 parent chaperone from each class. The expected ratio is 8 students for every adult. If you would like to be a chaperone, please email your child’s homeroom teacher. If more than one parent volunteers in the same class, we will choose the parent by random selection.


The cost for the trip is $25.00 per person (including chaperones). Students must also pack a sack lunch for the field trip. Students must wear their red FSA ES Logo polo shirt with their uniform. Comfortable tennis shoes are recommended. Students may bring spending money for small purchases such as drinks, snacks, and souvenirs.


We feel that students will benefit from this activity; however, attendance is not required and in no way affects the student’s instruction or evaluation. Please complete the bottom of this form and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher no later than Friday, March 27th.

Fifth Grade's Curriculum Corner

READING CENTER - MS. HOLLEY

5th grade On-level Reading Classes (periods 1 and 4):

Next week, we will begin the short story, “Chester Cricket’s Pigeon Ride.” We will focus on how figurative language is used to engage the reader’s interest. Throughout the week, students will be working in small groups. Each group will focus on reading fluency, working on the new vocabulary, finding the main idea and supporting details, and literary devices. On Friday, March 27, students will take a test over “Chester Cricket’s Pigeon Ride” comprehension, figurative language, and vocabulary. The vocabulary words are located at the bottom of the newsletter. Reading logs are also due on Friday.


5th grade Advanced Reading Class (period 7):

Next week, students will be quizzed over chapters 14-22 in “The Secret Garden” on Monday, March 23. We will be finishing “The Secret Garden” next week. Throughout the week, students will be working on their comprehension packets as we read in and outside of class. If students misplace this, it will be available in class resources. On Friday, March 27, students will be assigned a choice board project for “The Secret Garden.” We will go over all of the expectations and rubric in class. The choice board project will count as a project grade and test grade. Students will have until Thursday, April 2. Reading logs are also due on Friday.


6th grade Reading classes (periods 2 and 3):

Next week, students will have their novel test for Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” on Monday, March 23. Study guides are also due Monday. On Wednesday, students will be assigned a “Peer Teaching” group project that will review topics covered within the Common Core State Standards (provided in class). We will go over the rubric and expectations for the project in class. The rubric will be available on class resources as well. Students will have until Thursday, April 2, to complete their project. They will present their projects the week after Spring Break.


Study Island

I have added assignments on Study Island for students to practice their reading skills. Please make sure your student demonstrates a mastery of 70% or more. There are also individual learning paths that have been created. This is a great tool to use to help prepare your student for the Georgia Milestones test in April.

Answer Keys for Georgia MIlestones Common Core Practice Books

Answer keys for Georgia MIlestones common core practice books are available. If you need them, please email me at kozkan@fsaelementary.org. Since answer keys are copyrighted materials, please don’t make the copies. You can barrow the answer key booklets and return to me as soon as you get the answers.

6th Grade Math

Next week, we will continue reviewing 5th grade math curriculum during warm-up time for Georgia Milestones test in April. We will also continue our unit on decimals. Students will be given Check Up 1 over Investigation 1 on Wednesday, 3/25.

We will start Investigation 2 on Thursday. This Investigation has three Problems. Problem 2.1 reviews ideas of place value for decimals (from Comparing Bits and Pieces ) using a card-sorting activity. Next, students analyze student work and develop a standard algorithm for adding decimals. Problem 2.1 also introduces the expanded form of decimals. Expanded form serves as an explicit representation of place value, which will be revisited later in the Unit for the division algorithm. Problem 2.2 uses a similar structure to develop a standard algorithm for subtraction of decimals, using paper and pencil. Problem 2.3 brings back the idea of addition and subtraction fact families, in which students examine fact-family relationships. These fact-family relationships are designed to be an early introduction to algebra.

5th Grade Math

Next week, students will start learning about measurement and data. This unit will cover converting customary units, converting metric units, understanding volume, volumes of rectangular prisms and line plots.

Please make sure your child completes the assignments on Study Island to practice the topics we've learned so far. I send a packet home after we finish each topic for students to practice everything for Georgia Milestones test in April. Please encourage your child to complete the packets on time.

I have some assignments on Study Island. Please make sure your child completes 30 questions on each assignment and demonstrates a mastery of 70% or more. Study Island MAP Learning Path will help your child to reach his/her goal.

Classes with students who finish 15 questions and demonstrate a mastery of 70% or more (blue ribbon on each lesson) in each lesson will be given a pizza party.

ELA - MS. POUNCEY

Current News
For the week of March 23rd through the 27th:

1st & 4th, & 7th Period: We will be starting our Unit 7: Prepositional Phrases. The homework packets and study guides will be given out on Monday.

2nd Period: We are underway with our Narrative Writing Unit and I am hoping to finish it up by the end of this week. Final Drafts will be due on Friday.

3rd: We are still finishing up our Teacher conferences for the Narrative Writing Essays. This is my largest class and has taken the longest. I am hoping to have all essays turned in by Wednesday at the latest.

Please take note that there will be no more Spellig words for this year. We are nearing the end of our units and I want to spend as much time as possible reviewing for the GA Milestone in April.

I have assignments on Study Island. Please make sure your child completes 30 questions on each assignment and demonstrates a mastery of 70% or more. If you are not able to access these assignments please email me ASAP.

Home Access Center
If you would like to keep up with due dates for this unit, they are all posted a ready on Home Access Center. This will also be a great place to check for NHI's as well and absent work. I post all assignments at the beginning of each unit. I do my best to update grades as often as possible, but sometimes that is only once a week. I appreciate your patience!

SOCIAL STUDIES CENTER - MRS. PIERCE

This week in Social Studies, we will be wrapping up chapter 13 with an open book test. Because the Georgia Milestones test is fast approaching, the remaining tests in class will be open book so that the students aren't overwhelmed and stressed with the short timeline.

The students have been learning about the fall of communism, President Reagan, President Carter, oil crises, inflation, trade agreements, transportation, and many other topics that are closer to our present day issues.

SCIENCE - MS. KARAKOYUN

Next week we will start on Lesson 2: How are characteristics inherited? We will start this lesson with Gregor Mendel, and his research. We will talk about different traits.

Home Visit Program at FSAES

As part of FSAES Home Visit Program, teachers visit students and parents at their home.


Overall goal of home visit is to help strengthen relationships between parents, students and teachers and inform parents & students on how much they care.


We would LOVE to visit our students at home at your convenience.

Tutoring Reminders

Every week, subject teachers offer tutoring for students that need extra help. Here are a few reminders about tutoring:


-Students are invited by teachers as they see neccessary.


-If you feel your student needs extra practice with a specific topic, please e-mail the subject teacher. This way, when your student comes to tutoring, we will be prepared to help.


-Students need to have something to work on during tutoring, i.e. make-up work/test, missing homework


-If students consistently become too much of a distraction to other students, they will be sent to ASP.


-If students fail to comply, they will be removed from tutoring.
