TAKE GOOD CARE OF ME

Here are a few things to remember to keep your harp in good playing condition:

DUST LIGHTLY

You don't need to to do much to keep your harp happy-clean. For dust, wipe your harp down using a plain dust cloth or chamois cloth. For fingerprints or smudges, use nothing except maybe, a little bit of Endust. It is the only wood cleaner with no wax or polish in it.

PHEW, IT'S HOT IN HERE
NEVER, EVER leave your harp in a parked car. Heat builds up in a parked car and can literally melt the glue that holds your harp together. This damage may not be immediate, but it can cause your harp to fall apart - even explode!

NEVER, EVER keep your harp near a heater or AC vent. Always keep your harp in a climate-controlled area. It will thank you by remaining stable in pitch and in performance.

OUCH - THAT HURTS!
Always remove watches, bracelets, necklaces, brooches, dangling earrings and even wedding bands before playing your harp. These items can scratch the harp and also, distract you (and your audience) while playing. Belt buckles and shirts with large buttons or studs also can damage the finish or wood of your harp.

BE FIRM:

Minimize the possibility of your harp falling over when not in use by placing it on a flat, firm surface. Thick, soft-pile carpets may leave the harp feeling unsteady, so be sure to place your harp with your bench or stool just behind it after playing, to keep it steady.

PLAYING AND TUNING

Playing and tuning keeps your harp in tip-top shape. New instruments need to flex, stretch and grow their tone. It is very important to tune every single string, not just the ones you play. So play that harp and keep it in tune, it's the best thing you can do for it!

STRING BROKEN? DON'T BE AFRAID: Strings break, so for the next two weeks, tell us when a string breaks on your harp. We will send you a replacement for free. Voila.

Think about purchasing an extra set of strings for your harp, because you never know when a string might break. Need more info? Ask HILA.

(Everyone has their own special way to knot/replace a string. Be sure to speak to your teacher about how to replace a broken string on your harp.)

TUNE ME!

TUNE, TUNE, TUNE!

One of the best things you can do for your harp is to tune it and not just the strings you play - all the strings! Your harp needs to feel even tension and be in correct pitch everyday of its life to feel calm and happy.

Peterson Strobe Tuners are the tuners Lyon & Healy uses at their factory in Chicago. iStroboSoft is a mini version you can download to your iPad or iPhone. Don't be intimidated by this app; everything you see on the screen is there to help you. If you are confused by the app, have your teacher show you how to use it correctly.

Some find Cleartune's Note Wheel app easier to read and not so intimidating. Learn about both, and tune, tune, tune!
