About Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an island that was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1493. It was ceded to the US because of the Spanish-American War. It was granted US citizenship in 1917. It is in between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of the Dominican Republic.


Political Situation

Puerto Rico is a self governing commonwealth. it's chief of state is the president of the United States. It has a governor. While Puerto Rico controls its internal affairs, the US controls its foreign relations, military, and legal affairs.


Favorite Sports

Their favorite sports consist of Baseball, basketball, boxing, soccer, tennis, and cockfighting. Baseball was imported in 1898.


Representative Animals

Coqui

The Coqui ranges from 17mm-80mm. It has many colors (green, brown, yellowish) and has two dorsolateral stripes. They produce yer round, and begin to sing when the sun goes down. It is only the male Coqui that sings.

Main Dance Types

Bomba

The Bomba is a dance that was made at the end of 17th century (West Africans). It was called "Bailes de Bombas" and it was used to hold baptisms and marriages. The sound of the drums is called "barriles" (made of empty codfish or rum barrels). Dancers "challenged" the drums and the dancing got more intense.
