# Mrs. Grant's Kindergarten

## Spirit Week

We have a spirit week this week in honor of the Luke Butler scholarship fund. A \$1.00 donation is encouraged each day. Here are the days....

Monday - Snow day (wear your fav sports team)

Tuesday - Tye dye

Wednesday - Crazy socks

Thursday - Hat day

## Forest Inquiry Project

We had lots of grownups come in to see our forest on Monday. While we were writing we had some forest music on to make us feel like we were in our habitat. The kids had the opportunity to bring home their creations and if your child was a part of the Canopy group, I am sorry.... :)

## Writers Workshop

This week we talked about what is an opinion and how to determine the difference between a fact and opinion. We made a list of four things we like and don't like and why and started working on books that would reflect opinion information. Next week we will work on publishing our letter books and start opinion back up after spring break!

K.W.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

K.W.1 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic of the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book

This week we finished our work with cause and effect and finding relationships in the text. Good readers find relationships in the stories in order to better understand the text. We read The Bad Case of Stripes, Press Here, and I Can Help in addition to finding cause and effect relationships in our own books.

K.RL.7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear

## Words

During our morning message we worked on homophones and it was so much fun! I'm sure you have had some conversations at home about different homophone words.

K.L.4a Identify new meanings for familiar words and apply them accurately (e.g. knowing duck is a bird and learning the verb to duck)

## Math Workshop

Learning about 3d shapes this week was so much fun! We learned about cones, cylinders, cubes, and spheres. We talked about their similarities and differences, number of sides or faces, and if we could roll, stack, or slide them. I decided to have the students work on some Envision papers this week as independent work. The workbook would also be a good activity to work on at home!

K.G.1 Identify and describe shapes in environment using names of shapes

K.G.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or size

K.G.3 Identify shapes as 2D or 3D

K.G.4 Analyze and compare two- and three- dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities and differences

K.G.5 Model shapes in the world by building shapes

## 3D shapes museum

I thought I would save some trees and just put the shapes museum note here!

Please have your child bring in ONE example of the following 3D shapes on

Tuesday, March 26th

cube, cone, sphere, cylinder, and rectangular prism

## Science

We started our work on Motion this week which will be carried over after Spring Break. The students will be learning about how things move, using positional words to describe movement in addition to words such as back and forth, zigzag, round and round, etc. On Tuesday we made a played a game where we sat back to back with a partner, created a sculpture, and then had to describe the steps to their partner so they could make it. What a great way to apply giving directions in a sequential order in addition to using positional words. A half sheet homework page came home on Thursday for you to work on at home. It is due this week. Monday and Tuesday of this week we will be creating books on the school's IPADS that show what we have learned so far. Should be fun!!

## Creativity in play

This just happened this week across our classroom.. What an amazing use of perseverance.

Tuesday morning - I'm out for a district PD meeting. Will be back in the pm
