Mrs. Grant's Kindergarten

September 3-6

Long Weekend

I hope you all had a nice long weekend with your families. This week we all came back rested and ready to learn. :)

Readers Workshop

Our shared reading book was Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? We read it each day together, focusing on the sequence and words we see on each page. We added many new words to our 'words we see everyday' wall. On Friday, the students made a bear puppet to help with retell. As you can see, talking about stories will be a big goal for us this year. During workshop, we learned how to talk about books with our partner. We are up to reading independently for eight minutes - wow!

Writers Workshop

This week we focused on getting ideas for our books. We learned to make sure you think about your story before starting to write. We talked about how authors do this before each book. We also introduced a 'longer' book for students who have lots of ideas. This will be our last week in our unit of study and books will be sent home on Friday with a rubric attached.

Word Work

We are still working on friends' names and our letter handwriting. During our word work stations we read words around the room, listened to a story and read books, pretend typed words on pretend ipads and laptaps, ABC puzzles focusing on alphabetical order, and word games.

Math Workshop

This week we went over math workshop expectations, focusing on math talk. Next week we will be getting a math partner, in addition to having a writing and reading partner. This will help with math talk. We continued working in our math journals which will be coming home soon and focused on K.CC.4 , understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. With a partner and as a class, we talked about the numbers 1-4, practiced writing them and then finding number connections to write in our math notebooks. Some creative ideas for our numbers were drawing a dice with that number of dots, writing a name or word with that number of letters, the number word, and drawing a quantity. We will continue with this work next week.

Project Learning

Our first lesson this week was using science words and starting to think like a scientist. The students brought home their first science activity book this week. We will be starting our work on the five senses next week.

Other Happenings this week

Lifeline - our lifeline (character word) for the last two weeks has been patience. :) We are going to the library next week to create a video with Mrs. Patrick. Stay tuned for that coming out soon.

Friday afternoon - I prepared the students for a sub all morning and I haven't heard yet, but I'm sure it was a fun afternoon. We talked about being patient, helping out our friends, and reinforcing being flexible with a new teacher and a new situation. I hope it worked!

What to know about next week

Wednesday - school picture day

Thursday - Library

Friday - Students dismissed at 12:01 for teacher professional development day. No lunch will be served on Friday

Friday- back to school bash at BSE. It's Davis' birthday so we have family in town. I will be unable to make it this year. :( Have fun!

Snack update - fresh fruit, fresh veg, plain pretzels, plain crackers. No granola bars, vanilla wafers, pop tarts, or anything that contains peanut or tree nuts. I have been saying no to anything not from the list so you have probably noticed snacks coming back home. I have spotted lots of fruit, carrots, and crackers. Thank you for your help!
