State Releases Money to School Districts
Governor Tom Wolf's signing last week of a partial state budget let nearly $2.8 billion to flow out in direct state aid to school districts as well as block grant funds to pay for educational initiatives.
The Charleroi Area School District received nearly $5 million from the state on the first week of January. It is important to remember that we had two tax anticipation loans in the fall of 2015 in the amount of $4.1 million.

Charleroi Elementary and Middle School Recieve After School and Summer School Tutoring Grants
The PA Department of Education just announced that we will be receiving 21st Century after school grants for both schools starting within the next month.
The after school grant for the elementary center and Middle School will service approximately 30- 40 students starting sometime in February. It will also provide instruction in the summer for 60 students. Transportation funding is also included in the grant.
Safe Schools Targeted School Resource Officer Grant
In September we applied for this grant which would have awarded us $60,000.00 for two years. We were going to use this money to supplement the partnership with the Charleroi Borough Police Department as they provide security and additional services to our school district.
Unfortunately we were unsuccessful in obtaining the grant for this school year.
For this grant, There were 41 applications totaling over $2 million in school districts requests throughout the state . In total, 25 school entities were funded. Unfortunately, our application wasnot selected for funding.
Currently we are taking proactive measures with the "Office of Safe Schools" at PDE to discover ideas and narratives that will help us become successful in next years application process.
$15,000 Grant Awarded to Middle School Library
Vanessa DiCianna, our Middle School Librarian, has been chosen to receive a $15,000 grant from the EIO Fund for our Technology Program at Charleroi – Cougar Literacy Café Project.
Representatives from the Washington County Community Foundation will be at the Charleroi Middle School Library on Thursday, January 14 to deliver the grant check along with a member of their Board of Trustees and take a photograph or two for upcoming newsletters.
